Unhappy Dead auto tranny-replace advice PLEASE

Hey gang, my ma needs a bit of help from you knoledgeable folks. She has an '89 RX-7 with the auto tranny and it is DEAD! Overdrive just slips right out and keeps revving. Anyhoo, I know these trannys are near impossible to get new, parts are practically non existant or impossible to get, and the dealer doesn't rebuild. I want to know the following...again PLEASE!!

Option A
Dealer quoted her $5000 for a new one in Boca Raton, FL and said it could take months to get. Is this price about accurate and have any of YOU gotten a new one and if so how long did it take to get.........and your overall opinion of this option

Option B
A local shop there was recommended to her by Mazda to get the tranny rebuilt for $2,500..but although they are reputable...they WILL NOT guarantee it. How many of you have had an auto rebuilt and had luck with it (she DOESN'T race it and is very good with the tranny's). If so, how many miles are on your rebuild and what should we look for

Option C
This is my first pick...finding one in a salvage yard. What kind of price should I expect to pay for the part if any of you have done this. Assume the part is between 30-60K miles. Also, does it HAVE to be that specific YEAR (89), or can it be that whole generation, or can she use an auto tranny from older year models as well to increase our options.

I appreciate any responses I can get from you guys. Her car is ABSOLUTELY CHERRY otherwise...it is black, convertible, every bell and whistle and only 31K miles on it....unfortunately all city. She REALLY wants to keep the car. I myself am a Dodge Stealth R/T owner and hope you dont hold that against me

Any help GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

He might be parting the car out if there's enough demand.

Or a place called Rotary Motorsports, they rebuild trannys for like 450 Canadian!

dude an auto tranny at a junk yard is about 300bux. I'm actually getting rid of my auto tranny...I'm swapping it out for a 5-speed. The guy doing it for me is up in Morristown TN, and he will keep the auto tranny at his shop to sell to one of his other customers. It might be a long way for you, but I'll tell ya it's the right model for the car... it's off a 90 GXL, has 84K on it, mostly highway miles and it is strong as hell, never had or caused any problems. But I think TN is a little far for you to come to pick up a tranny! And dude, if you go for a new one, I would get a level10 tranny from level10.com they are 100% bulletproof and will greatly improve the performance of the car, but they cost 3,000 and come with a warrenty. Anyway, I hope you find what you need. Later

I too have an auto tranny I need to get rid of.It came out of my GXL parts car and has around 115k on it.I don't know how it works because the car didn't run when I got it.I'm in TN also so it's prabably a little too far away from you to come get.

One other option

If you don't go for one of the before mentioned ones available from Forum members, you should consider buying one from a Jspec importer. They usually give at least a 6 mo guarantee. If you could score one out of a T2 set up, that should get you one with stronger clutch's. Just be sure and use your existing own Torque Converter in that case.

However, I have to believe there is a reputable auto tranny repair shop that will give a 1 year guarantee. My advise, shop a bit more.

Good luck.

Thank you all very much for your information...this is my first time visiting this forum and I must say you have all been VERY nice and helpful..I am on 3si.org most of the time so if you guys ever have any questions about the Dodge Stealth or 3000GT....feel free to pop in...I have the same screen name over there. HOZZMANRX7, we are going to continue to shop (BTW, I'm 33 and don't live with my mother )...but the dealership down there has robbed her once already. Charged her $400 for a wiper motor!!! That is friggin ROBBERY. My dealership here in Melbourne (Boniface-Heirs) wanted $192 for the SAME PART..so I'm just trying to find all the options I can before she gets hammered by them again...and as I said...I know VERY little about these trannys

It's a really nice car and frankly...I'd love to buy it from her, but I don't have time for it. I'll tell you this...that car has probably seen 2 sprints over 100mph...and they were both done by me about 4 years ago! All the city driving (ALL city miles 31k) is what likely killed that OD.
