Daul Alternator Setup

Does anyone know of a write up on how to do this. From what I can tell all you would need is a custom mounting bracket. I am not running P/S or A/C so I could use one of the empty pullies to run the new alt.

I figure it would be cheaper than dishing out 400+ for a high output alt....

I'm about to install a stereo system in the Rex - about 1200 watts. I have 1 .5 farad cap but I am about to purchase 2 1 Farad caps and I do not want to be frying my alt or draining my battery.....

i don't remember my NA engine bay too vividly... but... if you mount a bracket and alternator vertically to the existing one, you're going to have problems with it hitting the hood or interfering with the other pulleys. If you mount it horizontally, it'll interfere with the CAS and/or A/C on driver's side and probably intake and air pump on pass side. It you try getting creative and mounting it somewhere else (say shock tower for instance), you're gonna have a problem getting a pulley around it. Unless there's something I'm missing, or more clearance than I thought, I don't think it can be done
a.) cause there's not enough room where a belt is easily accessible
b.) a belt won't be able to reach where there is room
c.) you're going to need another pully to run the alternator off of
Just my ideas though, i could be totally wrong

Yes, it can be done I saw a picture of a smaller alt. where the air pump was. But that's all I remember.

yeah sorry... I heard that it was done... I didn't mean to say it couldn't be done. what I meant was, I'm assuming this guy's engine bay is stock and everything is it it's stock position, including the air pump. In that scenario, it wouldnt be very feasible, but even then still possible with enough thinking

No, my engien is not stock. I have removed all the AC and PS components, even the moutning brace. I have the entire drivers side of the engine to play with.

I would also need to know how to wire it.

And more caps does not replace the need for a higher output alternator. The caps are there to give your amps instant power, but they have to be re-filled with power. So instead of the strain on the elec. system being present all the time, it comes and goes in waves (depending on the type of music you like).

might be just cheaper/easier to get a dual output alt to replace the stock one

Where do I find one of those? The cheapest Alt I can find so far is 450$. It's a 150Amp from Mechman...
