Dashboard Oil Leak

As you might have already guessed, I have an oil somewhere under my dashboard. I already did a search of this forum using the words in this thread's title but didn't find any answers as to what it could be or how to fix it.

Do I have to pull the entire dash to find the cause of the leak and to fix it?

Walt

Are you sure it's oil? There shouldn't be oil anywhere near your dashboard.

If It's Not Oil ...

... it's something that looks, feels and smells like oil. No, it doesn't quack

Check your brake and clutch master cyclinders, one or both could be leaking.

Engine oil?
Gearbox oil?
Power steering oil?
Cooking oil?
Baby oil?

There is no way engine oil can get into the cabin of an unmolested FC. Do you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge?

Is it coming from around the gear shift, assuming it is a MT? There is supposed to be oil in the change control case, this is what the shifter sits in. If the shifter boot is torn then oil can come into the car.

Could it be gear oil entering via the speedometer cable?

Aside from a leaking clutch master, that would be my guess. Gear oil will have a very distinct smell so it should be easy to detect. The leak would be coming from up in the dash, at the back of the instrument cluster.
