Dash speakers: 5 1/4" or 4"???????????

I know you'll tell me to search... but I did and I found out that most of the time only 4" speakers will fit in the dash, but that sometimes you can install 5 1/4"!

So here's the exact question: What are the biggest speakers I can put in the dash of an 86 GXL?

When I type the model of my 7 on an audio site, they all say that 5 1/4" speakers will fit perfectly.
The problem is that I measured my speakers and they are 4"... but there's still some space all around them (they are not sealed - the driver side though). The thing is I doubt that the space'll be wide enough to receive 5 1/4" speakers.

Thanks for any help guys!
Alex

All of them were 4" stock, but he was wondering if you could fit bigger ones in.
All I can tell you is to get some 5 1/4 speakers and see if they fit. You will have to make new holes if they will fit. You can get good 4" speakers, though. I have some fairly nice ones that dont work because my wiring is shot.

The problem is that if I buy 5 1/4" speakers and they don't fit, I won't be able to return them... well, that's the way it is in most of the audio shops.

sorry but i have a question about getting new speakers too and i didnt want to start a new thread.

i just wanted to know where the stock amps where at. i have a 90 gxl and i just took out the stock speakers to see what size they were so i could replace them (the best way to fine out what fit and doesnt). when i was removing them i notice they werent hooked up to any amps on the side, or maybe its hidden. please help. my stock system had the tape/radio with the eq, power antenna and four 4" stock speakers. i wasnt able to get into the doorpanel to fine out the other two. i read they were 6.5 but i think they are different depending on model. correct me if im wrong. thanks

You mean the only factor that makes them not fit is the depth of the speakers? The diameter is alright?

I put 5 1/4 in mine...you need a dremel. SO if you're not into cutting the dash on the driver side and making custom brackets on passenger side dont buy em.

Cartoys online says 5 1/4 fit perfectly in the dash, I should buy some from them and then take them back enraged and demand free 4" speakers for their incompetence.

The stock dash speakers are technically 4.5" speakers, its just other than for custom applications, almost no one makes a 4.5" speaker for sale in the USA.

A good 4" speaker is about the best your gonna get, but I suppose a true 5" speaker may fit (some manuafactures do sell a 5 in as a 5 1/4 inch) with minor tweaking to the frame of the speaker.

I bet you're wrong, Icemark. The speakers are technically sized in metric

Personally, I wouldn't bother with anything more than a 4" midrange in this location. You aren't going to get any bass from those speakers, and unless your crotch has ears, you aren't going to hear much from a tweeter, either. Plus, a 4" fits perfectly.

I put JBL 4" in the dash and Pioneer 6 1/2" in the door.... The door speakers are tricky as you can't have a very deep cone otherwise they interfer with the windows.

My preference if not for budget reasons would be to put tweeters up in the top corner of the dash as the lower dash speakers don't provide enough sound for the cost....

Just my two cents worth

I put 4" Polk mid-range speakers in the dash, and have a Pioneer 2-way seperates in the doors, with 5.25" woofers in the stock location and tweeters mounted between the air vent and the door latch trim. Cutting a hole in the door panel for the tweeters was a rather difficult decision, but the results look and sound quite decent.

Yep, they are metric, but in the US nobody uses metric system except when using wrenchs (spanners).

I keep trying to tell people here that the door speakers (for example) are 160mm speakers, but no one understands that, and wants to know if they are 6 1/2 inch speakers (which technically they are not- they are 6" speakers- 6 1/2 ich speakers are 170mm). And telling them that the dash speaker is 130mm would be just lost on 99% of the people here.

So its simpler here to just cop down to their level and use inches when talking about speaker size.

yeah the ones in the rear pods are 4"s. The amps are in the rear pods, take them out and open them up, you will see them. Anywho, some 8" subs will fit in them but i dont recommend it. I tried it and it sounded horrible. Im gonna make a bracket out of plexi and put some 6.5" component speakers back there. I recomend removing the amps.
