Dash Design Concept

I am thinking about re-doing my interior. Right now I am focused on the dash but I will also redesign the center console and 2 subwoofer boxes in the bucket seats with and amplifier between them. My goal is to have a very unique interior that looks like it could be from the factory. I am thinking about using fiberglass but I am open to other materials. Whatever it is it needs to be able to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight. id also like paint recommendations. If you can estimate the cost of the materials I would need for this project that would help too. The picture is a rough, 1st draft sketch done on tracing paper so excuse the quality. I drew it over a picture of the dashboard so it would me more likely to fit well, and not interfere with working on the car, but I am going to do some precise measuring and make a clay model.

I am looking for tips and constructive input and thoughts on the layout. If you are going to flame me, or talk about how impossible the project is and how I should give up now, you can keep it to yourself.

I would go for it. Make it out of fiberglass and either paint it or wrap it in vinyl. Were you going to modify and use the existing with kind of a cap or cover over it? Or Were you gonna make it from the ground up? If so i would make the design out of wood 1st then fiberglass over top of that and vinyl or paint it.

Good luck whichever you decide, one shot nitrogen dioxide.

I have not decided whether I want to build it from the ground up or not. Just building over the dash would save alot of time, but I am not sure how that will hold up over time.

Definitely looks like a mustang dash, seems like there's too much continuity between the driver and passenger side. its just a personal preference, but I like the "pod" like attributes of the FD interior, otherwise it seems like a regular commuter-mobile. But go for it man, sounds like a fun idea.

Yea I just looked at some pictures of a 98 Cobra interior and you are right the drawing looks pretty similiar, but there are some differences and details that I was not able to draw and those will help to distinguish them.
One is that the strong horizontal line in the drawing will actually be a lip that overhangs maybe half an inch over everything. Does anyone know about the best way to create something this size in fiberglass. Im thinking I will break it up into pieces to make it easier to disassemble for repairs.

Right, because it bolts right in doesn't it? Everythings fits perfectly, no gaps to fill, **** even the wiring is plug and play right?

I would start with an FC dash and make the modifications that you want to do to that. At least you'll have a base to start with and some firm mounting points to work with.

As far as adeshion, good luck with that. The plastic dash and the fiberglass, I'm assuming, addons with expand and contract at different rates and the flex alone I think will be enough for them to de-laminate. There is a new product out that I've used with success, it's called G-Flex made by west systems. Seems to work incredibly well in joining dissimilar matials and remain somewhat pliable. Painting it seems to be a problem though as the reducer used reactivates it causing it to peel.

My two giggest gripes about the FC dash is the position of the turn signals and wipers, and the center facing center console that doesn't run all the way to the back

^custom making your own dash isnt exactly a walk in the park either, it was just a suggestion that had good results on that one convertible that did it.
