Damn eccentric shaft bolt!

86 N/A.

Dear god. We are giving this bolt hell, I can't believe it hasn't broken loose.

Yes, I know the tq spec is 90ft/lbs with loctite.

We've hit it with a propane torch a few times for 5 minutes a pop. I saw bubbling around the bolt.

We sprayed it with PB blaster.

We broke a breaker bar and two ratchets, leaned on it with my air impact, nothing. I turned the air pressure up to something like 130PSI and it still won't break loose. We've got to be putting 300 or 400 ft-lbs of tq on it with the breaker bars.

heck, I even tried freezing it.

Just about out of ideas. Anyone got a suggestion, or do I throw it in my trunk and find a truck stop with a giant impact gun?

find someone with an IR Titanium series impact(like me) and that should get the job done. I believe my 1/2inch drive put out 1200ft/lbs at 130psi. IT is a beast of a gun.

Are you sure you're loosening it? Lefty-loosy righty-tighty

Kidding, kidding. That sounds odd though, because my buddy got the flywheel bolt off with his little 2-gallon compressor and a cheap impact before he sold me the motor... Hope you find a way to get it off soon bro.

Haha, just kidding.

The first engine I took apart, I think my little gun did it too...this is the second one I've pulled apart, and it is just NOT giving up!

I just used a 5 foot pipe and a ratchet, pinned the mount to a table to hold the motor from moving and bam, came right off, a 400lb impact wouldn't take it off.

if the engine is still in the car use the starter to break it loose just lean the bar up against the side of the car with some padding and turn the key for a split second should come right off

I too had a time getting it off, using a breaker bar work but that too much hassle I know the flyweel bolt is a 2" 1/8 socket that came of super easy with an impack gun also the shaft bolt with is a 3/4 came right off after puttin the tourch on it for 30sec. This was done on the ground. Using a breaker bar and not Have the force and energy u will struggle because there is no leverage.

Ive used a 1000ft+ ft lb gun with a torch on the bolt and have had them still give me major troubles.

First you will need a stronger gun than that 600-800 at 90psi minimum turn your compressor at 150lbs as most big compressors run at heat it up and it will go.

a friend of mine had a similar problem with the crank pulley bolt for his civic, which is also notoriously difficult to remove. He called some kind of service for people with flat tires or something (not AAA). The guy came out to his house and used the industrial compressor on his truck and impact gun to take it off. It wasn't cheap though, probably like an $80 trip fee. Worst case scenario, you'll have to transport the motor somewhere that has a badass enough gun.

A propane torch is not enough.

You need an oxy/gas torch. I just use a little oxy/MAPP gas torch you can get at most home improvement stores. They are made by Bernz-O-Matic and I think they are called "PortaTorch" or something similar.

Get the bolt dull red and then go at it with the impact. I've never failed to remove one at this point using that torch and my ~275 FT-LBs electric impact.

Thanks for the input guys. Aaron, that sounds like the reason I'm having so much trouble! I'll definitely check that out this weekend.

hammer and chisel. I see people do it all the time for a flywheel bolt.

We're going to let it cool and try it again, and then I'm really not sure what. Probably a truck stop impact or something...I think it's worth the $80 AAA trip or whatever if I haul it myself, and that's much cheaper than buying a new impact :/

lol...considering bolting a transmission, starter, and battery up to the engine for that extra torque...

Just to finish this out:

WE FINALLY GOT IT! DEAR GOD!!!

I took it to a friend's place who builds short track oval cars...he hit it with this impact gun (1 inch drive!):

and snapped off a 3/4" to 1/2" converter (didn't have a 3/4" 19mm socket)

so, I took the broken converter home, got a junk socket from the pawnshop, and welded them together:

Broke out the oxyacetylene, hit it with that impact, and it came right out! Amazing.

I always hear about how hellacious these things are. I guess I got lucky, got both the eshaft bolt and the flywheel nut off with my 1/2 in. blue point.
