Crazy?

I'm 16 years old and I am rebuilding the engine on my 88 SE. Anyone have any opinions about this? who thinks I'll be able to do it? I detached all the wires and hoses and I'm planning on taking out the engine tomorrow.

I've built many of them before. Without knowing you personally I can't answer that question since I don't know your level of mechanical abilities. At the very least if you have never seen it done before, get a shop manual and follow its instructions down to the very last little bit.

Why are you rebuilding it? Does it still run? Are you just curious? Porting?

If the car runs now then I see no need to rebuild it. If you do it as cheaply as physically possible and I do mean taking many shortcuts and sacrifices, you will need a minimum of about $450 to get it back together again. Mine typically cost in the $1200-$1500 range since I replace many things. If you plan on porting it, I truly hope you have practiced on other housings before. Don't let your good engine be your test bed.

You need to know what to look for in a rebuildable engine. It may be that there are many things inside that you would not want to reuse such as housings, bearings, etc. A picture isn't going to do much good in this area. Just because it ran before it was taken apart is not a good excuse to keep using the same pieces when you try to reassemble it.

My advice is to learn all that you possibly can first or get someone to help you. I do encourage everyone to get to the point that they can do it themselves. Good luck.
