cranks, fires, but won't hold

I just recently got a rebuild for my 88 T2 and it will crank and fire but won't hold it for more than a second or two. What the !@#$ is wrong here? I don't want to have to wait another 3 months to get to drive it!

It smokes a hella too. I tihnk that is because of all of the oil they put in the engine to begin with

I also have premix in there 150:1

Any suggestions appreciated!

Check for major vaccum leaks, especially between the intake manifolds. Is your timing set right?

make sure your CAS is aligned right (or did they do that?)...you can get a guestimate on your timing by having someone crank it and you checking it with light. Defenitely look for vacc. leaks and just try to re-check everything, connections, vacc. lines, make sure manifolds are sealed..etc. Its a pain in the ***..but its prolly something little.

Ah.... never thought about that... guess it could be the CAS! I thought I had it set right when I put it in though!..... I will check for vac leaks as well. Thanks!

Some, probably most rebuilds(I didn't say all). will have low compression for the first couple of hours of running. That means they will flood at the drop of a hat until then. Its possible that its flooding out. But I like the ideas in the above posts also.

Might also be that your afm's plug is loose. There is a micro sw inside of it that goes to the fuel pump. If that sw does not make when the flapper door on the afm is open, then the fuel pump will not run. The fuel pump runs in the beginning because that afm sw is bypassed as long as the key is held to START. When the key is let go, the fuel pump must have the circuit from the afm.

You might try to bypass that afm sw by jumpering the two socket, YELLOW connector in front or near the front right strut tower. Just hanging out there in midair notconnected to anything.

The smoke is just rebuild grease and oil Expect the engine to smoke for the first hour or so. More than two hours....start to worry.

Did I mention making sure the fuel lines were put on right???? The one from the fuel filter goes to the front pipe and the rear pipe goes to ..............

oh yea, while we are talkin bout plugs that aren't plugged in, there is also a 2x6 translucent/white plug next to the air filter. any idea of where thats supposed to go on an 88 t2?

BTW I kinda feel a little stupid bout that plug... FOR MY DAD THAT IS!!! we have both been working on the car!

There's lots of plugs that are not in use on some cars. Those plugs are for things like the auto adjust suspension. I think thats what that plug is for on the right strut tower. The left tower should have a similar plug somewhere in that area.
If I had the wire colors I could identify it, but its probably just that, for the non exixtent auto adjust suspension.

The afm plug idea is one I stole from Hypertenz(sp). I was reading some other posts today and just threw that in there.
