Crank Angle Sensor (G signal)

Yet another pulsing cold idle and I'm trying to troubleshoot a couple of error codes. Cleared the error codes by disconnecting the neg battery cable overnight. Reconnected the battery cable and read the error codes before starting the engine. I get 03, "crank angle sensor (G signal), broken wire, short circuit". [Also get a 30, "split air solenoid valve", but I'll deal with that later.]

If someone can tell me how to troubleshoot the CAS/G signal error I would greatly appreciate it. Visual inspection of wiring, internal and external, did not reveal any obvious breaks or shorts. And would this "problem" affect cold idle?

TIA, Larry

unplug the sensor, and clean the contacts. the cable that runs to the CAS via the pins on the ecu plug. do you have continuity? any resistance?

Unplugged the CAS and sprayed both sides heavily with RP7 ( the plug was gunked up with oil residue), reset the ECU by cutting power for 5mins then started the engine again. Idle didn't improve and the ECU was still spitting out an Error 3.

When you say check for continuity do you mean by creating a loop back at the CAS plug and check for continuity at the ECU plug?

there is a resistance check for the pickups

you also visually inspect the wires where they passes within the grommet on the cas body
,, issue is often a short here
continuity between the G+ or G - wires and or to earth will indicate this issue
( measured at the unplugged connector , CAS end )

Also, try regapping the pickups for the sensor. take the top cover plate off the cas. inside you will see two teethed ( a two toothed wheel and a many toothed wheel) wheel and two sensors for each wheel. find the g sensor (i dont remember which wheel it goes to ) and unscrew is mounting screws. dont take the screws out all the way as this is un necessary. put a piece of paper between a tooth and the sensor and screw it down tight. then replace the top cover, and replace the cas properly stabbing it. its is now regapped.
