counterweight question?
Hey guys,
Seems to me all lightweight flywheels need to have a counterweight with them...is this true? Like I have a 9.5 lb flywheel but no counterweight with it and it doesn't work right when the tranny is all back in there. I think if there was a counterweight on the back of the wheel it would set the space right and stuff would work right. Only thing is...I need a weight! Are all the counterweights for lightweight flywheels the same? DO different brands of wheels need different weights? Whats up? I'm not sure what brand my flywheel is but it is on a S5 non turbo. Any help is good help.

what kind of conversion are you doing?... that's a useful piece of information to give the board 
Anyway... If you are converting to a manual transmission and are going to use a stock mazda flywheel, then go ahead and remove your <rear> counterweight. If you're using a lightweight flywheel, then you need to get an automatic counterweight to use in conjunction with the flywheel. If you are going from a stock mazda flywheel to a lightweight flywheel, then you need to use the appropriate auto counterweight.

ALL lightwieght flywheels are the same size & style (86-91) The only diference is the counterweight. 86-88 & 89-91 use different counterweights. The conter weight is based solely on the weight of the flywheel & the year the car is. You really need to get the counterweight from you flywheel manufacturer... or risk getting one from a "same weight" RB or other flywheel, but it might not be right on.

you need to have an auto trans counterweight that goes onto the output shaft of the engine (the tapered part), then you bolt the light flywheel onto the counterweight via 6 bolts. From there it's just like normal. At least that's every setup I've ever seen.

Wait. I know the only difference between the lighten steel flywheel for ANY 13B NA 1984-91 application is the same other than the counterweight.
BUT, the diameter of the clutch disc is larger on a T2 than for a NA. I give you the difference really isn't that much. But, as a result, isn't the lightened steel flywheel larger on a T2 application vs NA application?

ok guys. iv done the swap to a T2 tranny with a light steel flywheel heres what you need for a lightweight flywheel:
the counterweight from an automatic of the same series. basically this means one thing. the counterweight has to match the total weight of both rotars. thats all. series 4 and series 5 rotars are different weights, thats why u need different counterweights.
the counterweight determined by the engine you have(rotars) not the flywheel, tranny, ect....
BTW i have an 88 counter weight for sale if anyone needs one. good for use on a series 4 car with lightweight flywheel.

Yeah I did get ripped off. I bought a flywheel clutch and PP from a guy on here second hand and he failed to include the counterweight, and he will not reply to my messages about it. Anyway, I sure wished I held onto the counterweight that I pulled out of the car when I converted the tranny. I'll go get another and see how it al works.

OK, I need either a s5 automatic counterweight, or just a plain old stock s5 manual flywheel. Does anybody have their old flywheel around? I'll buy anything to get this biznitch back on the road.
