Cooling Idea

Sup everybody.
I can't remember where i read this or saw it. But Does anyone have
some sort of enclosed engine bay. Imean I want to put something on the bottom of my car that will force all air that goes through the grill to go through the radiator. Let me know if you have any ideas.
Thanks Matt22

you should have a plastice peice under the car from the fatory. without it you can risk overheating. sounds like you are missing yours.

I think that for most of us street-driving and sometimes draggers and light-weight road racers/autocrossers, the factory setup is just fine.

FYI: My 400+ bhp TII has no problem being kept cool by the factory radiator, on the street. In a long road race, I think an aftermarket would be better and, that any improvement in ducting is a good thing.

When I went to an e-fan, my cooling was less effective and, I had to upgrade to the 3rd gen alternator.

I installed the Fluidyne radiator and it cools no better, for me, than the factory unit, with the a/c on and in heavy traffic.

mikeL I'm curious, with that setup what does your temp get up to? What is the maximum "safe" temp for the car? Nobody has ever given me a straight answer as to what the max safe temp for the rotary is...

If the cooling system (radiator and fan) are adequate, your normal temp should be what your thermostat is, 190°F (I'm not sure of the exact factory temp).

My understanding is that a lower temp thermostat is not a good thing. The factory 190°F(?) should be the best thing.

So, to answer your questions..., I run at a steady 190°F unless I've been racing for a lot more than a quarter mile or a few dyno runs. The cooling system is enough for those short street encounters and some non-pro road racing. Drag racing doesn't raise the temp very much.

I did some dyno runs last summer in 93°F+ temps. At the end of the fifth run, my water temp was 196°F. I guess that's a little above what the factory thermostat is.

As for a max safe temp, I think it's around 230°F.

RETed, you know the answer, tell us...

240F is pushing it.&nbsp 250F is absolute max intermittent, anything beyond that or sustained at this temp will guarantee a dead engine.

Nobody else knows that?

only 196? wow, I have the fluidyne too (stock fan and shroud) and on a hot day in slow traffic it will get to like 210 if i put on the a/c. I didn't know if 210 was unhealthy so I would kill the a/c and suffer. Looks like maybe I didn't need to worry...

Gene, it sounds like all is okay with your temps. Mine will go well above 190 with a/c and stop-n-go traffic. It comes down as soon as I've been moving for about a mile.

Man, I gotta get me a Haltech, if for no other reason than getting to see those cool printouts!
