coolant level sensor?

Year: 87
Model: Turbo 2

Is the coolant level sensor right on the top of the radiator in the middle and does it have the hose for the over-flow tank coming out of the middle of it? i broke the wire off of that thing and the buzzer is driving me nuts.

all the replacements ive seen pictures of dont have the hose barb coming out of it. do you have to disassemble the sensor to stock the hose barb in it or should it come with the new sensor?

Mine does not have that barb on the sensor. Mine is at the radiator cap. But to turn the buzzer off untill you get the senor figured out you can ground it and it will turn the buzzer off

you'd better post a pic of that"hose barb".
The sensor is just that,A sensor with one wire and a probe that enters the coolant. The body is hexagonal so you can get a wrench or whatever around it.
Like this one.

no thats not what mine looks like at all...

its an elbow thats coming out of the middle of the sensor that attaches to the hose that goes to the second rad cap that releases pressure into the overflow tank. the sensor wire is actually kind of cocked off to the side of the sensor to make way for the hose barb.

ill try and get a pic somewhere and send it. i wonder if someone did something "custom" at some point.

where is the overflow hose supposed to come off of?

so heres a description of what my cooling system looks like...its an S4 so start there.

theres no cap on the radiator. only a flt cap at the top of the t-stat housing and a second normal cap somewhere else...ill get to that in a second.

off of the radiator, there is the coolant sensor at the top in the middle-ish and out of the center of the sensor there is a 90 degree hose elbow coming out. that hose leads to a little fixture that houses the second rad cap. The hose from the coolant sensor goes to the underside of the second rad cap which is on that little fixture. the whole thing is mounted next to the pass side head light.

I cant seem to find any pictures of a stock turbo engine bay so i have no idea if this is some sort of "custom" application radiator someone crammed in there or not. however it looks pretty stock to me. brackets line up, clips etc.

anyone seen this before?

ill try and get pics in a bit but im at the office right now.

This sounds pretty custom to me. i havent seen everything but im pretty sure the stock turbo setup does NOT have a hose coming out of the water level sensor. if youre talking about the over flow tank hose. that normally is attached to where the rad cap would go on your cooling setup.

also if you cant find a picture of a stock setup,, try harder. or find the haynes manual. or online FSM.

and yes pictures would be great.

custom setup for sure. Both rads(s4/s5) have the low coolant sensor on the rad.

I've seen that before and it looks European.I think.
I can tell you how to put it back to "normal".Like US or CDN version.

Use a Regular Low level coolant sensor in the middle of the Rad.Hook the wire to to the low level sensor..Done?..good..
Ok,follow me now.
Where the Thermostat neck is: you will need a Pressure cap and a cap holder that has the OVERFLOW Nipple on it.
I think I see an assembly next to the Reservoir bottle up front, take that off and exchange the cap and plastic holder..undo the 2 10mm bolts and change those 2 parts out.
SO now you have the Thermostat neck with a Pressure cap and a overflow nipple on it.

Run the hose from the thermostat overflow nipple to the reservoir jug up front( on the left). This will allow the cap on the thermostat neck to open and relieve the pressure to the Jug.When the engine cools it will allow the engine to suck the coolant back in.(it is called a Give and Take system).
DONE.

You have parts left over. What ever **** you had next to the overflow bottle up front and the parts that were attached to the Middle of the rad,(sensor spot with that 90 degree elbow and small hose).not needed.

NOTE,Before you do this Please State where the hose on the Middle of the rad goes and what the Far left(passenger side Corner) of that rad cap piece attaches to.
Does that hose attach the 2?
