Coolant Filler Neck, broke head off bolt.
Coolant Filler Neck, broke head off bolt.
I'm talking about the screws that hold the black plastic piece to the metal filler neck. I removed the one screw, the one closer to the engine. Then I tried to get the other one out, and I screwed the top of the bolt right off the bolt. So the threads are just sitting in the housing there.
-Do I need to get a new filler neck?
-Can I drill and tap a bigger hole?
-Can I just use a C-Clamp to hold that side down so no coolant sprays everywhere?

hmm the first two options make snece to me, dont try the c clamp that wont work worth a darn!!!
depends a tap and die set are somewhat costly, if you can find a filler neck in a junk yard for 5 dollars id try that......
depends on how easy it is to find another filler neck tho!

try soaking it in a penetrant for a few days. then drill a small hole in the center, and pound an easy out into it. then, if you have access to an impact wrench, impacy it out. i would really try to get an impact though, you need all the tapping. if you can't get one, put pressure on the bolt, and tap it w/a hammer. let me know how it goes...
These things are not that rare, and I'm sure if you posted a WANTED ad in the classifieds section in here, you'll get several offers.
Penetrant = WD-40, Liquid Wrench, P'Blaster, etc.
They all work okay, and some will argue one is better than the other.
If you got a good pair of Vice Grips, you might be able to back them out after getting them soaked.

New Chapter in this saga...
So i tried using easy outs to get the bolt out, all it did was make a nice bowl shape in the bolt. So I decided to take of the filler neck and bring it into school so I could drill and tap or do what ever it takes.
Filler neck bolt 1, out. Filler neck bolt 2, halfway out, then snap. I am soooooo pissed. Now i get to stare at my thermomstat and half a bolt sticking out. I don't have heat/electricity/lights in my garage cause it's an apartment garage. I can't take my car anywhere without coolant.
What am I supposed to do? I can't "soak" this thing. Do I take a propane torch to it? Even so, i can't get a good grip on it with a vice grip.
