Convertors and the Vertq

I had a new exhaust put on a Midas and they mentioned that the three convertors behind the midpipe were leaking.

My question is can I replace these three convertors with a pipe? Will back pressure be a problem? What do they do? THanks

Cool

The converter are for smog only. You don't have to worry about back pressure. the converters basically get really hot. they don't work cold. Once they are hot they burn the unburned exhaust from the engine. Some states require you to have this item on your car like CALI. Check your local laws. If you do decide to remove the converter (CAT), you will find that the back of your car will need to be cleaned more often. That is because your polluting instead of cleaning like meeeee. That is what the converter does cleans the exhaust.

just have midas do up a custom single exhaust with a single cat if you want to pay cheap money. or otherwise head over to racingbeat.com and pickup a good header and catback and have midas weld in a highflow cat.

They could be rusted through or something.

Yes.

Depends on what model you have. If you have an S4 then the exhaust backpressure actuates the 5/6th ports (good thing). If you remove the cats, then you lose that. If you have an S5 or Turbo, not so much.

Make you pass emissions.

Okay I think that makes good sense. So since I have an 88 I don't need to worry about back pressure for my 5-6 ports?

Yes, you need backpressure.
