Upgrades for the stock catyletic convertor pipe?
I'd like to build a pipe to replace the stock "intermediate" pipe.... or whatever you call them. The one that has the cat on it between the downpipe and cat back.... Anyways, I'd like to bump it up to 3" and put in a random technology bullet catyletic convertor. This should complement a good downpipe, cat back, and intake well. Who has modified this pipe? Or does somebody make one?
I'm open to ideas.
Thanks
Chuck

I wouldn't bother modifying the stock pipe ... actually you can't to 3". Take the random cat to a good exhaust shop and have them put 3" piping on it to fit in the hole ... or buy a midpipe and have it cut to fit in the cat. Or ......... just buy a midpipe and switch the factory cat pipe back in there when emissions testing time comes.

You can buy a High-flow cat from N-tech for $340.00. I have this one. Works great. And it's a direct replacement for the stock cat.
I also saw some for sale in the parts section for around $200.00

I beleive the Random Cat' is a bolt on unit. The one for my Honda was and when I called them months ago about the RX-7, they said it was a bolt on as well. I did not purchase it, so maybe someone on here that actually has one can virify if it's ture or not.

I actually figured out that it was called the "midpipe", so I did a search and found a wealth of information. I'd probably go no cat since I live in Nebraska where there is no smog testing. That way I'd be able to loose some weight (and belt drag) on the motor by pulling the air pump.
I'm kind of curious as to what kind of power this setup I'm building will produce.... I'm going to build a custom intake w/ 2.5" free flowing pipes and build a box around it with a duct for fresh air from the front bumper. The car already has a 3" downpipe. Plan to add the catless midpipe and a good cat back exhaust (probably Racing Beat). What kind of power will this setup make? And will I need tuning? Would a Apexi A/F controller do the job in that department?
Thanks for the help

Do more research. There are many things to keep in mind when you go to a midpipe. Chief among these in controlling boost spikes and creep. Unless you can somehow control your boost to 10-11 psi, you WILL need an aftermarket computer. The Pettit unlimited is a little cheaper than the Apexi Power FC but doesn't have the flexibility. Also, the new AEM ecu is finally coming out -- might be a good option if you have the patience to wait a while.
Also, to make real power, you should really raise your boost to 12 psi or more. To do this safely, you should really get an aftermarket IC, which pretty much means you have to get an aftermarket intake to make room for the IC. Vicious circle isn't.
