COnvertible Performance
Hey Guys, Have a question for you. I have an 89 convertible, and of course, it looks good, but isnt the fastest. My question is what can i do to improve the performance, other then a TII conversion or bolt on turbo/supercharger. I recently ordered a K and N Filter kit alonf with the cool air inlet cover. Is there any thing else I can do to get better acceleration, power, and anything else you can think of? Oh yea, and if I buy the Bonez racing pipe to I have to do any other modifications to the car. I have heard I should also replace the ECU i think it was? PLease, let me know... Thanks!!!! JOHN
Also, I have a 1985 GSL-SE that I will be parting out, the interior is in excellent condition, the engine is dead, but if any one has any wants, let me know.

A vert without forced induction or a nice port will never be "FAST." You can make it move preaty good with a full exhaust; with a header, no cats, and some straight through mufflers. This will be loud as hell. BUT! a vert is about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times more fun to drive!

The racing beat 'vert down pipe, pre-silencer and cat back actually are a better choice than headers and cat back on a 'vert.
Only about 2 HP difference between the header and down pipe, but night an day more livable as far as sound.
The only draw back is that you wouldn't have a main cat and the car can get pretty stinky when you are not moving such as at a light.
But maybe 15 HP more with that and a cool air intake.
Porting and polishing the intake should be worth another 5-10 HP.
And an electric fan and light flywheel will give you more proceived HP.
next step would be NOS or a 13BT conversion (which if you have the money makes the 'vert just about perfect).

10-12 HP with FULL!! exhaust upgrades (convertible specific downpipe (replaces pre-cat), performance main cat, and nice RB or similar catback system.
5-8HP with FULL!! intake upgrade (cold air box, K&N intake, fresh air headlight airscoop).
Of course underdrive pullies, lighter flywheel, etc.. will help.
My 1989 convertible's pretty fast and dynoed 168HP with just a partial exhaust upgrade (ie downpipe & perf cat, HKS mufflers - BUT I have OEM piping and not Racing Beat piping).
I love you THIS much for taking care of me

I want a 'vert.
But I want a coupe too....dammit. The choices...
5 stars for this thread though. I was just searching for 'vert performance yesterday and this question seems to come up often. Good post.

I have a 88 Vert my mods are listed below im not sure what else im going to do but an intake for sure and a good chance of a chip. (any guess where that would put me for horsepower?) after that im thinking thats all i can do really for the $to horsepower ratio maybe some pulleys? Do they make that much of a difference?\

I'm hoping to get some more power in my 88 vert. with a Bonez cat, and eliminating the 2 pre-cats. I'm not sure what to expect. The engine seems to have some guts, but acceleration is only average.
BTW, the RP guy I talked to yesterday says that only turbo cars have downpipes, altho people here use that term for both n/a and turbos.

It is not as noisy as a header because the cast iron exhaust manifold deadens a lot of sound that a header just rings.

So is there a difference between getting the racing beat downpipe with a hi-flo cat, or the bonez cat which is 1 piece all the way to the manifold? Either way I need the cat for MD emissions.

Does anyone know if there is a diff. between the bonez racing pipe for the 86-88 vs. the 89-91? Can they both be used on a 89 vert? Whats the difference?!

The convertables are fantastic cars- just beatifull... it's so retarded that they weren't offered as aturbo here...
The weight and flex of the vert is such a bad combo for the N/A engine in ANY trim.... sure you can port if, but you have to wind the F%^k out of it (trust me...) while thats fun, it just doesn't appeal to me whn driving a vert by the beach on a nice summer day....
Just put a turbo on it... will cost you a lot less than you think if you take your time and watch for deals- and also- of course- do the work yourlelf.
My cost so far, for intercooler(s) , fuel pump, injectors, manifold, S-AFC, TII exhaust, and turbo- only about 450 bucks US! The main chunk was the 200 for the S-AFC.
I was very fortunate to have the help of some very generous and knoledgable people though.
If I could find a Vert with a blown engine for cheap- I wouldn't hesitate to buy it and swap my engine into it!!
Any have one?? heheh..
