Confirmed Weights of Second Gens

While we already have a sticky dedicated to what trim levels came with what, I wanted to search for a list of weights by model and by year to see exactly what the differences are, since the brochures don't give enough detail.

Hopefully, we can compile a list like what Icemark's page has. If anyone has verifiable information regarding the weights that are not included, please fill them in and cite the source. All weights are for the 5-speed model.

I always wondered how much these cars weighed, I mean being rotary, they should be light as heck!

Wet or dry weights?

I'm guessing these are shipping weights, that these vehicles didn't ship with any or with very little gas in the tank.

yea, quoted from the factory should be dry. But most weight comparisons between car models are done dry anyway. It's the specific car-to-car done by owners that are usually compared wet.

The problem is, the rotary comes w/ so much paraphernalia for emissions that kinda negates the weight savings of it's small size. The main advantage of the rotary, from what I can tell, is not it's lightweight but it's low profile. It's lower in the car, allowing better handling (better roll center or something along those lines).

I believe it's just better center of gravity as well as a better moment of inertia.

On the door line of my TII it says 3150lbs. But here it say's 2850. Why is that? Is the weight stated on the car wet weight (oil, fuel, p/s fluid, etc)? Would all the fluids add an additional 200lbs?

I took my NA S5 to a dyno day, and I got a weight of 3125 with me in it. Also, about 1/2 gallon of coolant, a 1/2 quart of oil, small roadside kit, and back seats:

The S4 numbers are incorrect for the Sport, and remember the GTU added insulation and GXL style carpets, Turbo seats, and power mirrors that the Sport didn't have.

And the GX or Luxury was not a GXL. It didn't have power windows, it didn't have the AAS or LSD or even 15" wheels.

So the S4 numbers are mostly incorrect. You need to have factory window stickers to get the actual weights.

The problem is, we don't have hard data for those models, just the ones that were taken off the Mazda Factory Brochures and your website, as well as rough estimations based of differences in similar models of another year.

The ones that were not estimated were taken off of the brochures stickied in this section or on your website.

The ones from my site are confirmed by multiple sources, such as the brochure and the window sticker, or multiple window stickers.

I have my old 87 sports window sticker but have never had access to another that I could confirm the weight with.

GVWR and Vehicle weight are two different things

The GVWR is the maximum with two passengers and cargo (to allowable limit) that the vehicle should weigh for road taxes (some states and countries bill your vehicle fees based on the load on the road).
