Concerned about oil temps

What can cause high oil temps, besides not using the under tray, and having a front mount?

Oil temps at:

Idle (when starting the car for the first time during the day) = 190F
Idle + reving it to 3K rpms = 210F
Cruising = +210F

The oil cooler is working, and so is the thermostat, as I can spray cold water on it, and the temps will come down within a second; from 210F to 160F!!

Am I being paranoid?

Not sure of the right temperature it should be, but you want oil hot enough to burn away formation of condensation/water. If it doesn't, acids form attacking component/materials.

Normal oil temperature varies quite a bit depending on the operating conditions, but usually stabilizes between 140F and 200F. If the temperature exceeds 210F, reduce the load on the engine immediately or shut it off. Continued operation above 210F may damage the engine.

I think it depends on actual air temps. I live in Las Vegas and the outside temps are 100 deg + all summer. My oil temp goes to 210 when getting on it.. I don't think 210 is really that bad for me.. Anyone have anything bad to say about 210 deg oil temps? Alot of web sites tell you different temps based on their knowledge.

is your oil cooler clean? The more dirt and grim build up the harder it is to cool. Also is all your shround and air duction still in tact?

The oil bypass pellet on the oil cooler closes at 165 degrees.. therefore, you oil temps should not go below 165 after the car warms up...

If the oil cooler is functioning, Dave at KDR tells me that the oil temps should remain within +5 degrees of the water temps..

I haven't got my Oil Temp gauge installed yet (had a mishap with the adapter and blew oil all over the floor... lets just say that stupid resistor thing on the rear iron got in the way... )

but my water temps hit 205 (haltech datalog) by the end of a hard run at the track, so i'm hoping the oil temps are close to that...

Not happening here, at idle they are the same, they aren't otherwise.

I haven't cleaned the oil cooler, but I'm shure 99% of the people here haven't either; it seems that this is not a common issue. Shroud and air duction won't affect the temps at idle.

It depends where your sensor is located. I don't mind 210F oil temps while gunning it!

BTW - The sensor is located at the oil pedestal.

On our race car we had a oil cooling problem and the oil got up to 280F. We redesigned the system and now have water at 180-190 and oil 200-210. These temps are fine and we don't even worry about it now. I would only worry if the oil gets above 225F for extended periods.

I would take it out and straigten all the fins out .....

Also, take your hand and put it on the cooler and see if it is hot the same amount across the face of it.

Where would the optimum placement for the sensor be? I know racing beat makes a pedestal you can mount the oil temp to but the moroso oil pan I have also has provision for an oil temp gauge. :Would putting the temperature sensor on the pan make it less accurate than say at the oil filter pedestal?

Yes, the temp is equal on both side (hot enough to burn my hand), same on the oil filter pedestal.

There's no accurate place, as long as you know what the temp should be on that specific location.

Yep, the oil in the pan will be hotter than at the pedestal. It will fluctuate as you load and unload the engine. I'd much rather know what the temp is after the cooler, right before it goes back into the engine.
