Compression

How can I do a compression test on my own with a standard compression tester? I've read it can be done....just not sure if it's the same way or now.

BTW, what's the different model lines mean (GXL, etc...)?

Yeah. It goes something like pull the top plugs out. Get your compression gauge and pull the needle valve out and throw it to the side(the needle valve, not the gauge!). Screw the gauge into the top hole(your choice, front or rear). Depress the throttle pedal with a foot, rock, or a long piece of wood wedged against the pedal. You figure how to crank the engine, any way you want is fine with me. While the engine cranks the needle will briefly bounce up and then straight back down until the next rotor face comes around. Watch and see how high each bounce is and hopefully they will all be about the same. It helps if you cover up the lower numbers with a finger and just pay attention to how high each pulse is. You'd like them to be within five psi of each other. If you should download the factory service manual at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com/Technical_I...ice_manual.htm and there you will find acceptable values. P.S. make sure the engine is warm or hot when doing this and that the throttle is wide open as you crank. Oh yeah, disable the fuel pump so your not spraying fuel around and washing oil off the rotors. I'm am sure somebody else will write another much better description later .

as for the different types of cars

you have the base, GXL which is the luxory car with power everything rear window wiper and I think leather as an option for the seats also from what I hear early ones came with a LSD, you have your turbo's from 87-92, there is the GTU and GTUs both of which I think are kinda like the TII without the turbo and have the 4.3 rear. you also have the sport (what I have) which is kinda like the GTU(s) xcept they can have sunroofs, cruise, and a few other goodies that I think the GU never was able to get and they also dont get the 4.3 rear or the LSD that hte GTU got but they do have this nifty little aero kit thingy that goes on them that looks kinda cool.

OOOPS. Try *ARTICLES* on this site http://www.teamfc3s.org/main.shtml and under *Articles* find the article on how to check compression.
