Cold start up backfiring, stalling.
So as of recently the car starts after a prolonged winding over, like 10 seconds...
Revs with hesitation and unless I literally fight the car with blipping the trottle, it will die... and whilst blipping the throttle its having a f**king firework show out the exhaust pipe. Literally can smell the fuel... I have tried adjusting the idle mix with no effect when hot, doesn't alter the 750rpm idle at all.....
A good minute after this morning bullshit it settles for a 1500rpm steady idle and drops idle normally until the 750rpm idle when warmed fully.
The POS is a S4 NA manual, stock standard, Well maintained.
I'm leaning towards the tps.... Rotary shops here are $180 an hour of labour..... So i'll happily have a stab at this first.
When the engine has a tad of warmth in it or hot as hell, it starts instantly.
Any ideas?
Cheers.

Okay, so if you keep it running after getting it to start; it all settles down after about a minute?
Does it drive fine after all of this is over with?
It sounds like there are probably 3 possibilities if it is just doing it on cold starts.
Vacuum leaks
Leaking fuel injector
No cold start assist/emissions on it (Not sure what all comes on Aussie s4 fc's)
First, if the rats nest is missing it will be difficult to get your car to idle/start correctly while cold.
If it is missing there is a chance whoever removed it fucked it up and you'll have a lot of fun stuff to fix.
If it is there there is a good chance the vac lines are old and need replaced. I know another one of your posts said it was rebuilt 20-30k miles ago. They may have replaced some of them, maybe not.
I'm not sure if a leaking fuel injector would cause that, actually. It just sounds like a possibility.
I would start with checking for vacuum leaks. That's usually the best thing to do with a stock rotary. Good luck.

So as it turns out, you guys rock, the rats nest was resting on the back of the thermosensor doobi watsi and had snapped the clip off.
Spliced a new one on and it runs like a gem! Also reset the timing and a few other things... never been better
In desperate need of a spastic port and brap tho....
Thanks guys!!!!!
