cold air solution
cold air solution
Well first let me explain my setup. I am in the process of a conversion of a complete 89 N/A motor in a 85 FB
OK anyway I am allmost through throught this swap, one big problem has come about. I was looking at away to get that gigantic stock air filter assembly mounted, but there just isnt enough room in the fb for it to fit without surpremely ******* this thing up.
One of my buddies suggested just throwing a cone air filter in there. Know I know there are tons of kits out there but I'm pretty broke and cant fork over $150 for an air filter assembly.
Now it looks like I might be able to get away with attaching a cone filter to the air flow meter. Is there any problem with doing this?
What part number from K&N should I be looking for?
If this setup would not work, what kind of setup would you guys reccomend for the S5 motor? My budget is about $70 MAX.

No problem with a cone & adapter, actually preferable. Here's an Ebay one with a genuine K&N and unobstructed 3" adapter. A little more than the generic cones, but I would trust a true K&N more. The filter itself is about $30 new.
Dont buy the adapter! you wont need it, if it is an 89 motor, than it has the 89 mafs and you just get the k&n cone from a parts store that is the same part number from that link (im assuming to lazy to look, i posted my partnumber once before search for it) and it will fit right on to your mafs with a hose clamp
cool, I thought I might be able to get away with just the filter because its the S5 afm.
With that In mind, would any of you guys reccomend a k&n specific model number to get?
One more thing, I left the airbox at school so I wont be able to see it so, wasnt there a spot for a small hose connection on the filterbox itself? I'm pretty sure there was one, what would I have to do to that hose that was supposed to connect to it?

huh? i'm not sure what your talking about. keep in mind i have sn fb so I'm more familiar with the carb air system. I really need to learn more about the traditional fuel injection cold air setups out there.
Exactly how would I set up this breather filter. Does anybody have any pics of their filter breather setup?

just look at the air pump and there should be a hose on it take it off and stick a breather in that thing. unless you do not have the air pump then you can just forget it.
If you are putting a 13b in your fb. I would suggest taking off the ACV, EGR, BAC, PS, AC, vac spider, and the air pump. Most of that is just in the way and not needed
Here's a good link for K&N part#s and sizes. http://www.knfilters.com/universal/universal.htm
I've been looking all over for one of those little breather filters for a decent price.

yeah, i live in WA so i do need to pass emissions. This swap would be so much easier if I didnt have to.
I'm going to California this summer for a little bit so I need A/C.
And unlike the FC's, most of the FB's didnt come with power steering to begin with! But you guys get the rack and pinion, whereas we get the recurculating ball steering... which sucks. Its a trade off I guess.
Also the S5 motors didnt have EGR.... so thats not a problem.
Anyway thanks for the info guys!

I suggest contacting whoever does the testing in your state to find out.
With a swap like this you wont pass emissions in some states anyways.
I think he can do it. He'll have to run a cat or two, but shouldn't be too big a deal.

And there is no reason why any enigine could not pass emissions if its swapped into a different car, just as long as the state does not do a visual inspection.
Washington doesnt do that.
ahh! that k&n site is confusing as all hell considering I dont have my afm here... its at school so I wont be able to measure it till monday.
Since I'm sure TONS of you have done this before, could someone just give me the correct part number for the cone filter and the breather filter?

Part # Is In this previous auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1873645969
ok so I realized that as long as I have the correct founting flange inside diameter any filter should work....
what is the measurement of the 89 amf?
