Mine is s4.

I mostly followed these directions:

http://www.fc3s.org/how_tos/engine/cold_air_box.html

Mostly. I used black RTV instead of the tape, for one.

That's not a cold air box, it's a heat shield. Big difference.

Cold air implies some way of directing cold air from outside to the filter. An airbox is a sealed box with a filter inside. The Mariah "cold air box" is neither of these things, as it is only a heat shield.

the mariah box seals with the hood, so that kind of puts it in the airbox category... if it came with a vented head light cover then you could push it into that cold airbox teritory but i don't have one so maybe it does more than i can see.

WHY would you not incorporate the stock air duct into the "cold air box" the red picture has the side of the box blocking the flow from the stock duct.

Not a functional design in my mind. I would think one would want all the air you can get, from what ever source.

That ducting sits right on top of the rad. Kinda defeats the purpose when the air is getting heated by one of the hottest components in the car... I tossed that duct when I finished my box.

Even a 'hot' source? The hole I cut for my box gets plenty of air from ahead of the rad. The only downside might be if the car is motionless for a time and the rad gets a chance to heat up the air between it and the nose. But then the efan will kick in and suck/blow all of that heated air out the back of the car, pulling in more cool air from in front of the car.
That's my theory, anyway.

The stock snorkel must be attached to a sealed airbox to work. Air won't be pushed into it, it must be sucked through it.

I remember a few years back some guy actually tore out the whole air box and air tube / elbow and put together his own CAI and painted it and it looked pretty hot.. Went down into the fender too.. Too bad I don't have pictures of that kit anymore it was pretty spanking neat...

Why not incorporate the snorkle of the existing system, rate of flow, temp transfer from "hot" rad, cold air coming in.

What about ambiant air temp?
