cold air box

im currently building a cold air box for my apexi intake filter. ive got half the box made but i have a few questions. im using aluminum and electrical tape right now to make a template for my dad to take into work and weld. am i going to be ok with the aluminum alone of should i insolate it somehow(?). does anyone have pictures of were its safe to cut out below the filter? ive been looking for the prior threads of people making true CAI's with all the piping and cutting but 2hours of searching and slowness has turned up nothing for me. is it worth keeping the stock intake shroud above the radiator and incorperate it into the box somehow or should i just scrap it and seal off the box from everything execpt the inlet hole on the bottum. ill take some pictures of what ive got done tomorrow. thanks in advance all

If you want to keep that you have to make sure that the cold air box is totally cut off from the rest of the engine bay. After making an attomica cold air box myself, I dont really know why they are called cold air boxes, they should be called heat shields. Many heatshields I have seen on the forum are not totally isolated so it may not help much. I really liked what nick86 (sp?) on the forum did. He cut a hole in the sheet metal and made a duct for a true cold air box.

Yea from what I can remember his box was totally sealed off from the rest of the engine bay and he used a holesaw at the bottom of his box and through the sheet metal using some heater hose as a duct to where the brake ducts are.

Hey there,

That link above is still good, but you guys have to scroll!

The pics didn't link properly the first time I made the thread, so SureShot was nice enough to host them for me. If you scroll down in that thread, you'll see the pics and the entire writeup. It is about 10 posts down, and under SureShot's username - take a look!

Lemme know if you have any questions!

Ok, it does seem that the pics can no longer be seen in that thread, so I'll post them again, at the END of that thread.

Please read the whole thread though!

I've updated the original post with the writeup and pics. The pics probably won't last more than a week or two, but by then SureShot's server will be up and running. Follow the link above, search for my user name. The Title of the thread is "Got Cold Air? - I do!"

Enjoy!
