clutch question

hey guys im new here and just picked up an 88 GXL non turbo about 4 days ago. its in excellent shape, but does have some issues. heres the story, every now and again i'll go to shift or stop and the clutch peddle will get stuck down, but the clutch will release and inguage the gear its in. when i got the car the clutch master cyl fluid was black so i flushed it. didnt get to flush the slave cyl. but my question is does it sound like the master seals are shot and i need a master, or could it be caused by the gunk still in the lines and the slave and just needs a flush? just lookin for some input from people who know these cars better then i do. thanks for any ideas and i love the info in the forums.

Tim

Push the clutch pedal to the ground and have a friend watch the slave to see if it retracts. If it moves that means you've got a leak somewhere. Oh and go ahead and flush all that bad fluid out, it takes 5 min.

That's not right. You can see it from the driver's side, just look down on top of the transmission bellhousing. you'll see it. Follow the line from the master cylinder.

Save yorself future headaches by changing all three parts of the clutch hydraulic system - Master, slave, and flex hose. Costs under $100 for all three. That'll solve a lot of problems. Takes about an hour to do the job, and you'll have no more clutch hydraulic trouble for many years to come.

I am having the exact same problem. Almost identical. I've been having to shift into neutral when slowing down, because if I downshift, the clutch gets stuck to the floor and I have to pop it with my foot. Sometimes, it locks in first or second gear and the car dies, especially if I'm at a stop light. I keep it in neutral until the light changes, then shift as normal. I pop the clutch back out and it rides ok. My first thought was the slave...sounds like I was dead on.

I popped the hood and I'm leaking fluid like a mad man.

I've got an appointment with the local Mazda dealership tomorrow....hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg.

You really think a dealership is gonna cost me a lot?

I just moved to southwest Florida and am not familiar with any trusted shops here....matter of fact, the local news just exposed a ring of repair shops for gouging customers...I figured at least a dealership would know the Mazda in and out....

Dunno....now I'm worried.

clutch hydraulics don't differ too much between cars. The guys at the average dealership don't necessarily know the ins and outs of the motor or the peculiarities of the 2nd gen, but they can do this kind of stuff.

Thanks for the heads up. I just bought a master cylinder for 69 bucks. Ironically, I was just talking to my neighbor who by pure chance owns a repair shop....he told me he'd do it for 80 bucks.

Whew...
