Question Clutch busted on freeway!!

When i bought my car the previous owner said he replaced the clutch hydrolics. I then replaced the clutch with a new ACT Stage II. So on my way to class this morning the pedal dropped to the floor and I could not get my car into gear...... I didnt change the pilot bearing when I changed my clutch could this be the prob? Or is it the clutch hydrolics again? And can I find these parts ant the junk yard and would they be worth buying used, or would be going to the dealer better wiht this type of part?

thanks fellas,
- James

Check to see if there is fluid in the clutch reservoir first. If not, then you know you have a leak in the clutch lines. This would be the first area I would look.

My local NAPA store had a clutch line on the shelf for $11.

Exactly!

If the pedal stays in the floor (down), it is a hydraulics issue, non related to the pilot bearing. It is wise to replace both at the same time (pump and slave), however check for leaks, and or broken hose before buying anything.

I suggest getting everything new if you indeed need them.

So your clutch didn't bust...i was expectng a pretty good story

And i don't think you need to do both at the same time. And the rebuild kit for the master is only $13 from Autozone.
Didn't price the slave but i'm sure it's even cheaper.

That happened to me once, it was the master cyl... sure sucked. I found I could pull the pedal back up and then if I pressed it hard I could stuff it into gear... so I tied to my shoelace to the clutch pedal so I could yank it back up with my foot and limp home...

Ya I had to stash the car and get to class so I checked the fluid when I got home. . ..nothing wrong there. But the pedal comes back up now. And I can start the car... but i cant engage the clutch enough to get it into gear. Maybe there is air in the lines some how?? So I can get the clutch master and slave cyl from liek kragen? Ill have to see the prices on those... and jsut out of curiosity, does anyone make steel braided lines for the clutch?

I'm sure a braided SS line is commonly available. Make sure it's coated.

Since it seems like the MC recovered and sounds like is working some, have you tried adjusting it? If it went to the floor and you've got plenty of fluid it does sound like a fubared master cylinder.

Sorry, I can't comment on the availability of the parts. My parts car has been good to me.

when i put in my ACT clutch (S/S) i had to bleed the system to get the pedal going, and then had to adjust the pedal height so it won't grind the gears...

True, but if your 15yo master cylinder is shot, chances are the slave isn't far behind. For the minor expense of replacing slave at the same, you'll know you won't be stranded with clutch failure for a second time. This happened to my Cosmo. The nice new master cylinder popped the slave after about a month.
the rebuild kit for the master is only $13 from Autozone.
That's no use if the bore is stuffed. My master cylinder failed on Tuesday (had to tow it home ), and once I got it out (bitch of a job) and apart it was pretty obvious it was not repairable. The bore was rusty and pitted. I'm getting a new master and slave tomorrow.
