Clutch adjustment disaster

Well, I was having some issues with a soft pedal on my way to KFC last night, so I figured I'd adjust the rod a little bit there in the parking lot. Bad Idea.

I cant get my car to engage the clutch anymore. Both fluid res's are full, but the pedal is soft. If you look at the FSM, bolt c needs to be loosened so that you can tun the rod (labeled "D" on the FSM) and change the free play. If I adjust it one way, the pedal just falls to the floor. If I put it all the way the other way, it'll have a SLIGHT amount of pressure, but not enough to engage, the clutch cant even get the car in gear.

Am I adjusting something wrong? Because no matter what I change down there, it doesn't fix it. I had to put the car in first, get rolling down a hill and start it. Couldn't stop, wouldn't be able to get the car back in gear.

I would say that your "soft pedal" had nothing to do with the free play.
Sounds to me like either the MC or slave has died.

I basically tighten with my fingers until I can't tighten it anymore. Make sure the locknut is backed off enough that it isn't bottoming out on you. Like the previous post said, you may have a failed mc or sc.

but do I want the rod as far in or as far out of the pedal as possible?

The FSM calls for .2 to .5" of pedal freeplay before resistance is felt.
If- as I suspect- you have a problem with the hydraulics (MC or slave) you won't be able to properly set this until you fix the underlying cause.
