clunking when breaking, and shuttering

i get a nice clunk when i rapidly slowdown, my question is what bushing is bad that causes this?

I also have a shuttering when i'm turning at a slow speed, just asking to verify that that is my wheel bearings needing to be tightened|?

thanks guys

quick way to check wheel bearing is to jack up the car and try to wiggle the wheel back and forth if there is play the wheel bearnings are bad.

I had this same problem!! Its the strangest thing, and i really cant remeber what i did to fix it because it was so long ago... probably like 4 years ago.

I THINK my problem was one of the front calipers. I have the 4 piston ones, and one of the pistons on the front left caliper was seized up. and after i rebuilt the caliper (it took an air hammer to get that piston out) I'm pretty sure the sound went away after that. So, I think the sound was that one pad moving when getting uneven pressure applied to it.

I was thinking it could have been the upper strut mounts in front; but i had the car up on a lift and if anything was that loose, I would have been able to feel it when i was pushing on the front tires.

My car is a 90' and when i got it in 2002, i was, saddly, the first to ever change the brake fluid

Realized this is a 2 part question, I'm posting about the ‘clunk when breaking’.

If by shuttering when you're turning is it when you're making a really tight turn ie u-turn, 3-pt turn and it feels kinda like your wheel skips then it's the wheel bearings. For the clunk when braking where is the sound comming from? For me it was fine under normal braking but if you brake hard there was a clunk, my motor mounts were shot. When you're starting in 1st if you release the clutch at low rpms does it shudder because that's another symptom of bad motor mounts.

Oh, I just remembered that I thought that clunk under stopping might have been loose wheel bearings, too. I checked them out and that wasnt the problem on my car...

that may be the cause of the shuttering though. How many miles are on you car?

I have the same problem I parked my car with the ebrake on and it rocked the car back and forth while under the rear. I found out that the pillow ball that connects to the rear trailing arm is bad. I found if your rotors are warped a little, under braking the trailing arm moves back and forth causing the clunking noise. Hope this helps.
