Click

hi i was wondering what happens when your starter motor just clicks? I have this problem and i've tested and i know it is the starter, but now i have it off the car, i was wondering if i could put it together with another starter and make it work again. so what keeps it from turning over? worn out bushings? toast solinoid? there is enough voltage for sure, so don't worry about that. could someone please just tell me what part is malfunctioning when your starter clicks thanks. im just curious

I think it's the coil that moves the gear into position, but i could be wrong. I know my dad used to take 2 messed up chevy starters to make one good one, but that was a long time ago and i don't know if the japanese was are as forgiving.

i think youre right the click is the solinoid moving the gear forward, but what keeps the motor from turning?

the reason is there is armature in the starter just like every other electric motor. on the armature there are brushes that make contact, that closes the circut. the brushes wear out to nothing, or sometimes jams up between the armature and barrel. but thats usually the failure point of a starter.

the starter contacts go bad most of the time. i know it toyotas you can replace the contacts. they're like 26 bucks. and most of the time the start works great after they are replaced.
