Chipped Tail Light

Hey, I was wondering, can chips be fixed on the S5 tail lights? I got some S5 tails for cheap because it had a tiny quarter inch chip on the lower left of the tail light on the right tail light. Can this be fixed? And if so, how much would it cost me? Thanks.

well the only thing you could really do would be to gob some plastic repair compound (ProForm, Dura, 3M, Fusor all make a variety of different ones) on there and build it out to beyond the original size of the corner, sand it down, prime it, sand it and paint the black surround.

Probably spend $50 in materials.

Cool, thanks. Which of these would be best for this situation?

Also. There's one more chip of the same light, it's exactly the same, except a little farther down, but for this, I still have the chipped off piece, so I basically need an adhesive to glue it back on, which one from that link would be best for that?

the 100EZ is what you're after.

If you still have the piece for the other chip just glue it back on with model cement (found at a craft/hobby store) that will hold it back on excellent. Then when its dry, sand any excess glue off and if required put a thin coat of the 100EZ on to smooth it out, then prime, sand, paint.

I know Carquest would have the ProForm and Norton stuff (its available in different drying times from 1 minute up to 50), but the Fusor is a bit more specialty, but NAPA or the like should have something.

I'd say just forget about fixing it. It looks fine the way it is and you can accidentally make it worst by trying to fix it. Once it's installed it will never be noticed.

Getting someone to fix it would prob cost more than the lights are worth.

hey jigsaw the only thing that might be hard to do, when you are using some kind of compound to build the black plastic surround up, is getting it to stay so you can build up that edge of the black trim.

The compound is gonna wanna sag down maybe you can take a piece of cardboard and put it where the line runs for the black trim piece and put bond or whatever on that till it hardens.

There is probably a proper way to build up an egde... Anybody know?

O ya there is a curve in the tail light also its not just a straight line you have to build.

You pretty much said it.

At the I-car plastic repir courses, they suggest you use a plastic film that you can buy from the repair compound mfr. (they all make their own) but really, anything works.

The method for making a bumper tab is similar to what you'd need to do here.

Basically, pump your glue onto the plastic sheet, attach the sheet to the bumper (or tailight in this case) and fold it over itself to hold the glue in-place. Once dry, remove the plastic and VOILA, new tab.

But in this case I would just stick itto the back and have it follow the contour. No need to fold it (plus it would crease due to the curve it follows) since you will be finishing the outside with filler or plastic finishing repair putty afterwards anyways.

WTF????????

OK, firstly - that question can be answered by reading the FAQ for FC sticky at the top of this section.

And secondly, what in God's name does that have to do with a chipped taillight?
