Check engine light comes on when I accelerate.

Hey all, I'm new here and sincerely apologize for making my first post a request for assistance, but I'm new to rotary engines (and new to working on cars in general) and my check engine light on my 89 rx7 gtu comes on when the gas pedal is depressed even slightly (with the engine running of course) Do any of you have any suggestions of things I might check? I have a very limited budget and virtually no tools (I have a pocket knife with a screw driver on it )

The check engine light is sorta in the middle of the dash. And I'm sorry if my question sounds incredibly stupid, I honestly haven't much of an idea how to work on cars, though I am trying to learn now that I have a car that I actually want to put time and money into.

---edit---
Ok, so from what I've gathered, along with the check engine light, the car somehow delivers an error code. How do I go about obtaining an error code and how can I find out what it means?

Does a buzzer go off too? If so, maybe you are low on oil and its sloshing to the back of the pan?

Dunno. Just an idea.

No buzzer, and I did check the oil (One of the few things I can do, I'm no mechanic, but I've learned basic maintenance stuff).

He was rather blunt, but he did remind me that forums incorporate a search feature I found how to get the error code and will try to see what I can see tomorrow or Sat. Thanks for your help guys.

If the CEL comes on the ECU has generated an error code. Click here to find out what one. Once you know that then refer to the Factory Service Manual to find out what to do about it. If you don't have the FSM, click here and download it in PDF format for free.

You should really read the stock FAQ too.
