check engine light

All of a sudden my engine light is coming on!!!!!???? This is after the car has been running and the engine has been to its operating temperature for a good 10-20 mins. Heres the kicker, if I come to a stop and turn the car off, and start it again, the engine light does not return for about 10-20 mins. When it is on, I have not noticed any change in the cars performance in any way. Has this happend to anyone else? Is there a cure? Just want to find out why, any suggestions? Thanks

Umm....because your time range is so large I am going to diagnose an electronic problem. Could be some stupid cold sauter points. I tryed to fix some on my car but when I acsidently burned through a pair of pants I decided that that was an adecuate message to stop. I havn't tried since however, my electronics work surprisingly well so I don't really care. 91's should be one of the more reliable cars when it comes to electronics so I am actually quite baffled. Go with the sauter points and work from there. There is a good tutorial somewhere just search through some related threads

have you noticed a change in gas mileage at all? sometimes when the O2 sensor is messed up the check engine light will come on...

Why don't you ask the ECU yourself?
Do you know you can scan the error codes in the ECU?

I didnt know that you could, I do have a haynes manual, so I guess I should be able to find out there. That is a start. And I just took a 1000 mile roundtrip and did not notice a change in my gas mileage.

take a piece of wire and open up the engine bay. look to your right where the battery is located and to the right of that there should be a small green plug that is not connected to anything (1 inch by .5 of an inch). its got two prongs in it. stick one end of the spare wire in one of those, and ground the other end to either the fender or the negative terminal on the battery. go in the car and turn on the ignition (to where the idiot lights come on). at this point if you have stored codes the check engine light will come on for a second and then turn off...following this it will flash in a certain series to inform you of the part of the car that is messed up (if there is). i think scott has the procedure and code listings on his site... www.1300cc.com good luck man

hi, guys, I have the same problem with my 7.
I did the turbo conversion on my n/a, with a 90 j-spec in it now.
for some reason, the check engine light comes on in about 10 minutes or exceed 60 mph, at normal temp. I have checked my TPS, changed O2 sensor, but light still comes on. one of my friend checked the code(I don't know how he did it), then he told me that was O2 problem, that is why I changed the O2 sensor, but the light still on.

hey, gtrr4, did you find out what's wrong?

thanks

if you are getting an 02 code it could also be the wire, check the wire between the sensor and ecu. it could be either broken or shorted out. mine was so I ran a new wire through the fire wall and cut the one off at the ecu and spliced the new one in.
