Unhappy Check Engine!

I have a 1989 GXL RX7 which works fine except for Check Engine!(light) comes on after 15min. of driving, if I turn off the car and then start it again it seems to work fine until the -Check Engine! (light) comes on again, if I do not turn off the car it will jerk, even with the gas peddle floored it will not go anywhere. Can someone please help. thanks in advance.

(Oh by the way I opened up the hood one evening it happened and the cat was red hot.)

You've got two issues. Clogged cat, and from the 15 mins then bucking, I'm willing to bet my *** a bad OMP. Fix the cat, then try again, if you still have issues, then pull the error codes (pop the hood, find a green single pin connector on the drivers side near the battery and ground it) then hop in the car and turn the key to the on position, the check engine light will begin to blink, there will be long and short blinks, a long blink is considered 10, short is 1, a pause means it's going to the next code, write down these codes, then head over to http://www.1300cc.com and look to see what ones you have.

Be sure to do so, usually we help people out, and they never tell us what happened, so it sucks! Let us know what you find, maybe we can help fix it!

OK! Guys, I could not wait to go check the diagnostic. Here is my findings. Code # was 27 and #37 both read-( malfunctioning MOP, step motors, broken wire, short circuit, or malfunctioning ECU) Can anyone tell me where to start first?

Aha! Just as I had guessed. The metering oil pump is one of the prone failures on a 89-92, anyway, you can get the FSM from http://www.fc3s.org, (get the 89 manual), and read about the OMP and how to check it/replace it.

itd be difficult, but make sure if u take it somewhere to get fixed, to tow it. with no omp you can blow a rotary very fast, and if youve driven your car a bit (more than 10 miles) youve probably already done some damage to the engine
