Hey guys

I'M about to rebuild my 87 13B. RX-7. And were not sure if its been ported or not. After I get it rebuilt im thinking about getting a cool air intake and electric fan. is there anything else thats simi cheap to help its performence?

Thanks!

NA or Turbo? Keep the air box, drop in a K&N. An electric fan is not a performance mod. It will do nothing for you unless your stock fan clutch isn't working.

Better performance? Tune up and tires.

porting might be cheap for now since your engine is apart, but make sure you get your car tuned or it will just cost a lot ot for another engine rebuild.

Nothing is cheap. You could dissconnect your exhaust and remove your intake. Hee hee

If you just got it i'd recommend the 60k tuneup. If you search for that you'll come up on the list from the owners manual that I posted. For price i'd call napa, autozone, kragen etc and see what they say cause prices differ across the nation.

As for the cheapest mods:
  • weight savings. take all the crap out that you don't need. I'm sure you don't have an anchor in there, but search for weight savings or gutted car and you can choose how much you can live with taking out.
  • Air up the tires.
  • Clean up your grounds or reground the car. You can buy kits on Ebay or whatever, but I regrounded the car with some stuff from Ace Hardware for about 10% what those cost.
Anyways, try searching for "beefy n/a".

cheap performance doesnt really exist...You could gut your cats and build a cold air box with a filter that shouldnt cost you more then $50 but you need to make sure your auxiliary ports still work (look at the archives). You will feel porting your engine the most. If its N/A I would focus on suspension. coilovers = awesome...but they aren't cheap

Hmmm... don't entirely agree with upgrading brakes first. On an NA, the brakes are more than adequate unless they are shot. Calipers will increase your braking force but if you can lock the wheels on your current setup, stronger calipers will only make locking easier. Rotors are mostly for heat dissipation/brake fade prevention which isn't really necessary for a street application. The first thing you want to do if you're seeking better performance is to upgrade the tires, then the footwork, power, then brakes. IMHO anyways.

Have your motor ported when you rebuild it. Just a mild streetport will improve performance and shouldn't require much tuning.

Are you looking for better acceleration and top speed? Cheapest mod you can do if you drive on twisty roads is driver mod. Just work your way up in baby steps or it won't be as cheap as you planned, lol.

Either way for you to mod your car cheaply you need to out-engineer OEM and make your own parts. Buy some books and do your research. Familiarize yourself with hardware stores, electronic stores, cutting, machining, welding. There's tons of aftermarket parts that can be built easily as long as you put in the effort to research and build it properly, BIG different between ghetto rigging.

I guess it all depends on what you consider cheap. If you have to tear the engine down already as it is, then porting is very cheap, and the best performance gain you'll find on an N/A. however, going too insane with it and you'll end up needing to get some kind of fuel management. What kind of budget are you working with?

Your basics would be an intake, exhaust, ignition plugs and wires, maybe some eletric fans. Short shifter would be a good little investment.

umm, I mean, theres a few things you could do without spending awhole lot.
I'm sure theres a thread already covering this subject, just search for n/a performance or somthing like that.
