Cheap Paint?
i have 2 different rx7's one a 86 GX and a parts car which is a 87 GXL ... both have paint pealing in certain area's ... i dont kno if the area's have been cheaply re-painted due to accidents or whether the factory paint isnt the best quality ... my question is, is anyone else having this stupid problem?

For their time FC's have great factory paint. Bad thing will happen after 15+ years though. Alot depends on how well the paint was taken care of. What you are describing is not out of the ordinary. Most people just don't take the time to care for it.

well almost as soon as i bought the car ive made sure the car has stayed pretty clean (outside and in) and it jus started flaking off all the sudden one day. i dont know if it was the changes of weather or if sumthing scratched and started the whole thing. it doesnt really bother me cause the paint under is also red, i think it might just be the clear coat that is coming off. But im no painter

My car is doing that. The paint is starting to flake off around the edge of the door, and a couple of other places. The paint job is a year and a half old... but lucky me there is factory paint directly underneath!

On a plus side, even with peeling paint, I had some guys checking the car out when I took my girl out yesterday. Good times.

I have the original factory paint on my 10th AE and it does have very little minor paint chips/flaking all around but there is a large flaking on the bottom part of my driver side door. Otherwise, its in good shape.
My '88 SE had no paint chips/flaking at all. Just a bit of a slight fade on the front bumper but otherwise, great shape (it was garaged however most of its life.) Not sure about the quality of Mazda paint though. Majority of FC's I see need a paint job. But my '87 BMW still has EXCELLENT paint. Hasn't even been garaged in the past decade either.

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
well the 10thAE and S5 cars (except 'verts) had considerably worse quality paint prep than the S4 cars.
It's much more common to have flaking factory paint on the 10th AE and the S5 coupes.

I know maybe for the S5's, it could have been for cost but why the 10th AE? I was told that the 10th AE had slightly better paint but wasn't sure if it was true or a rumor.
Just curious...thanks.
