Cheap cone filter **WARNING**

Just another reminder not to use a cheap cone filter bolted directly to your turbo.

My friend went to the track and just a little bit of wheel hop caused his filter to fall off and the turbo sucked in some wires.

turbo

shredded wires

He still managed to make a couple clean passes even though the turbo only would only boost 11 lbs...

I don't think the filter is was at fault. He should've tightened it better.

if you're scared that it isn't tight enough, put some wire mesh in front of the turbo.

common thing today, no one is ever willing to blame themselves but always blaming their faults on other people/objects. tell your friend to tighten the clamps down next time.

Putting a filter directly on the turbo is just plain dumb anyway.

QFT. If he had a K&N on there, would you be warning us that a K&N filter was crap because it fell off?

If a bit of wheel hop caused the filter to fall off, it wasn't properly secured. Period. Either the strap holding it to the turbo wasn't tight enough, or the other end should have been supported by something.

Now, had this been pictures of what I was expecting (a paper filter having come apart, FRAM oil filter style, and being sucked into the turbo), then this thread would be reasonable.

But cheap air filters do suck though, no pun intended. I've seen them fall apart due to the cheap adhesives they use.

I forgot to take a picture of the filter but it was partially melted and deformed.

That was probably due to the fact that he had it mounted right onto a 200-400* turbo/manifold..................................This still qualifies as an OPERATOR ERROR.

What I'd like to know is why wires were running in front of near the intake?
Why wasn't the wires secured with at least a bunch of nylon wire ties?

So we have a cheapo filter, installed where it shouldn't be, not installed correctly and loose wires near the turbo. Someone rescue this car...

you get what you pay for. honestly, i run a cheapo filter on mine. and i ran a K&N on my last S4, i saw no difference, except for the price. This was a driver error. If the filter came off because of wheel hop, thats pathetic, because even a shitload of wheel hop shouldnt be enough to make a filter fall off... sounds like somebody just shoved it on there and never looked back, and cmon...wires lose right next to it? please..

Im with NZConvertible, somebody rescue this car!

I"m not going to lie I run or ran one of those filters and it's not that iit isn't secured good enough (hose clamp not tight enough) it's that the filter element actually comes unglued from the intake itself! I've seen this on two of these cheap ebay filters and what I do is either a) resuper glue it on temp fix or b) screw the element on through the metal holding it on. I'm glad mine fell off when i wasn't at the track though!

Ted, I was going to ask the same question about the wires..but in the current state of my T2, I have no idea where the stock stuff does run, so I decided to keep my mouth closed on that one :P

Tell him to sell his car..
