changed to electric fan. used the gtech

I just put an electric fan on my 87 gxl. The fan i used was from a fiero and I bought the thermostat from adv. auto. The fitment was perfect. The fan covers all but 2 inches of the right side of my radiator. Engine temps are currently lower than normal because I am still fine- tuning the thermostat. I ran a wire from the fan to an led inside the car so I can tell when the fan is running and hopefully adjust the temp setting from there. I only have around $50 in the whole thing. $25 for the fan and $17 for the thermostat.

As for horsepower the gtech showed 119 to 120 at the wheels before and aound 123-125 after. Not much of a gain if any. The car does however feel much more responsive while under highway speeds. Keep in mind my engine has around 170k on it. The only mods are a rp intake and racing beat cat replacement and presilencer pipe.

I knew I would not get much of a gain by doing this, but I just love working on my 7 and it freed up alot of underhood space for naca duct hood mod I am thinking about doing.

Holy crap!&nbsp I'd been surprised even with a 1+hp gain, but your results are fantastic!

I take it it would be relatively easy to fabricate something to cover the rest of the radiator and seal it off. I think that would provide the best results, but I haven't tested anything.

Then again, I have seen 15 hp gains on the g-tech from rolling the windows up...Being that the fan on a RX-7 is a thermal clutch fan, the only time it really uses power is low speeds and idle, otherwise, its pretty much freewheeling anyway. But the fan mod does clean up the engine bay nicely..Max

I used the uncovered portion of the radiator as a mounting point for the thermostat sensor. So far cooling has not been affected by it. The car actually runs cooler with the electric fan on it.

I got the fan from a fiero in the junk yard. Cost me $25. Don't buy one of those aftermarket fans they simply cost too much and don't include a shroud. The fan I used is built into a shroud so no need to fabricate one. Advanced auto had the thermostat for around $17.

I have pics of the installation but don't know how to post so if anyone willing to help I can email to you.

I checked my zip file. the file is too large to post. I will try and change it up and post some pics of the fan installed later.

I also used a fiero fan from the junkyard. I bought a temp switch and everything pretty much fit perfect. you just need to make brackets.

I have not made any brackets as of yet. I just used heavy duty zip ties looped through the radiator and holes in the shroud. Fitment from top to bottom is perfect. Looks like it was made for the car.

I always wondered how you mount a e-fan to the radiator without puncturing it. If anyone could let me know I would appreciate it.

Well, I believe the tubes run vertically so you can stick zipties right b/w them and wrap it around a tube closest to eac of the 4 fan shroud holes. I used aluminum brackets and used existing mounting points.
