Cats with no airpump

1.5 years ago I put in a new universal 3" carsound (magnaflow) cat (cheap) into my RB exhuast. 2 days later went to emissions testing and passed.

next day the air pump and ACV came off and I drove for 1.5 years with no air going to the cat.

durring which my boost creep has anways been the same so I don't think it's cloging.

2 weeks ago I stuck in a corvette electric pump and passed emissions.

hmmm.. don't cats melt away and break in like a couple days with no airpump like everyone says

or if you use cheap cats

hmmmmm......

How the heck are you opening your 5th and 6th port without the airpump?

I remember your mentioning of the lack of the Air Pump and how your Cat Is holding up awhile back. This should ease the old saying your Cats will rot within days w/o an Air Pump than.

I'm not sure why people would say the catalyst will break down without the air pump attached. As I see it, the air pump supplies air necessary to burn the large quantity of hydrocarbons (HC) remaining in the exhaust. This burning of excess HC is what makes the rotary exhaust so hot, so not having it connected may have saved your cheap catalyst from extinction!

If your tune is good, the cats should not carbon up.
If you are running rich, the extra air for the cat is needed.
To tell if you are running rich - check your exhaust tips.

Kosh - He has a turbo - no aux ports.
