Can't shift into gear (pilot bearing???)

I was driving today and after stopping at a light I couldn't shift into gear. Ater a few minutes I managed to jam it into gear. I pulled off the highway and as I got further on a side road it got worse. Finally it would not shift into any gear. Resivoir is full. Hydraulics seem fine. When car is off, it shifts fine. When engine is running clutch won't disengage. I think I need a new clutch and pilot bearing. My question is... How much should I expect to pay a shop to replace the pilot bearing and clutch? How much do you think it will be for just the pilot bearing? I dont have the tools, time, or a lift. Please let me know if you have any insights, or if you think I am on the right track with the diagnosis.
Thanks,
-DL

sounds like a shattered clutch plate,

a clutch place should charge you more than $200 for labor and replacement of the 2 bearings, and PLUS the cost of the clutch....

you might wanna find someone to help you out and pay them, since replacing a clutch isn't **too** hard

It's the pilot bearing. If your clutch is old, might as well do it too and be done with it in one shot.

Make sure whoever does the work uses plenty of hi-temp bearing grease on the pilot bearing, or else you'll be doing it all over again.

It cost me $375.74 for a clutch install and flywheel resurfacing/balancing. And the guy who owns the shop is a good frined of my mom, so he actually cut off some of the labor!!

I'm in the same boat and I was quoted $700 + by a bunch of shops. Needless to say I'm driving the 200sx beater and planning on doing the clutch myself.

Either that or one of part of the pressure plate crapped out. That's what happened to me. Same symptoms...time for a new clutch! Don't forget to resurface your flywheel while your at it.

I was quoted by "Rotary Reliability" in Southern California $400 for Pilot/Throw-out bearing/Clutch remove and replace, complete.

I have been having similar problems and the car is in the shop now. I also have something wrong with the input/output shaft of the tranny. Major vibration and metal sounds. Waiting for the bad news from the shop now. <ducking>

Dave, Its not a difficult job. Also, I have a pilot bearing remover and flywheel nut wrench you can borrow. Also, you can drive the car safly without the clutch. Just start the car with it in gear to get moving, and match revs to shift.

My GTU has destroyed two clutches in one year. I'm not harsh on clutches, I think I just got some really crappy ones.

The first clutch disc shattered and the second clutch had the clutch springs separate and wegde between the PP and clutch. Both clutches had the same symptoms you describe.

I've got a 4 puck copper clutch now, so hopefully it'll hold with no problems.

I think i paid about 145 for a clutch kit at Advanced Auto.. it had everything I needed, Clutch, Pressureplate and throwout bearing... oh, and an alignment tool.. THOSE THINGS RULE!! I can't believe how much easier it was with that stupid little piece of plastic to align it.. mine only cost that. It'd didn't take too horribly long, either, you should do it, or, as other peeps have said, bribe someone beer
