Try the above. Not guaranteed to work, but all that is required is to remove the shifter from the transmission (three bolts), and then sort of dig around in there and look for pieces of plastic.

If a syncro goes out, then to me it seems reasonable that you could get into whatever gear by double clutching. Sort of bypassing the syncros that way. So it you can't get into the gear by double clutching, remove the shifter and dig around.

You saying you removed the shifter and layed it to the side, then looked down in the liquid to see if there was any trash in there? I'm saying even if you bushing are good, there could be old trash in there from old shifter plastic bushings/shims.

So if you looked, the it's another thing. Have you ever driven the car and tried to double clutch it into the missing gear? If it goes in double clutching, then it isn't trash like I suggested.

I've had this type problem in the past and couldn't double clutch it into the missing gear (fifth I think). So I took the shifter out and laid it to the side and picked the trash out and it worked for me.

The last url shows double clutching. But I see you want to go UP a gear, not down a gear. Normally you can be in say third gear.........pull the shifter into neutral and firmly (but not to firmly) hold the shifter against the fourth gear gate. As the rps go down the shifter will slide into forth easily (if your gear grinding, it's too firm a push on the forth gear gate).

Or you could go to fifth and double clutch into forth gear. If none of that works, can it really be a syncro??? Might be. I'm not that big on transmission problems.

I once double clutched a car from Corpus Christi to Ft Worth TX. Mostly open hwy though.
