can't figure it out.

Ok guys, I'm stumped and nobody on the 1st gen forum seems to be able to solve the problem. Here's the info:

84 SE
Miles on car/engine: 121,000
Car was parked in 1995, and I just got her going this past spring.
Mods: S5 upper, middle, and lower intakes
S4 TB, S3 AFM, TPS, injectors, and sensors/solenoids. Full racing beat, single outlet race exhaust with functional O2 sensor. Air pump and ACV removed.

Here's what I had done/installed that I can think of:

Injectors cleaned and tested by KG parts. They came back good and a perfect match.

Stock air box and filter removed and cone filter installed.

New coolant temp sensor installed

New O2 installed

New plugs, wires (1st gen), air filter.

Did not replace dist. cap, rotor, and fuel filter yet.

TPS checked and adjusted----all is good

Gas tank drained and re-filled with fresh gas and
seafoam.

2GDFIS (2gen leading ignition mod).

OMP is not hooked up, so I threw some MMO in tank.

Checked for leaks. I even used propane and went around the entire intake and vac hoses----no leaks.

AFM seems to be working fine. It opens up slightly at idle and opens more at acceleration.

Ckecked for spark at all 4 plugs-----all good.

Problems:

The car is running extremely rich. I' talking---burn your eyes rich. It has smoke coming out the exhaust, but I can't tell exactly what color it is. I have a hard time identifying colors. It looks white but maybe blue----not sure. The car surges between 1000-1500 rpm. If I rev the throttle by hand, it is all broken up----real rough. If I drive it, it wants to fall on its face and buck. It will backfire intermittently at idle and between shifts.

At idle, it makes no difference if I pinch the BAC hose or even disconnect it, or if I adjust the air screw on top of TB. I have the mixture screw all the way to lean, and richening it up at all makes it run worse. If I really push the throttle down in an attempt to try and close the throttle plates a little more, it doesn't surge, but it idles terrible and wants to stall. I just had the TB off and checked it out according to the FSM. The only check that did not pan out was the secondary throttle check. It says to open up the primary throttle and take note to when the secondaries start to open. According to the FSM, the secondaries should start to open up when the primary only has like a hair of an opening (I can't remember off the top of my head). But I can put a 1/8" drill bit in the primary clearance when the secondaires start to open. I thought that this was odd, but I looked at an S5 TB and my stock S3 TB and they are the same as the S4. So either the FSM is wrong, or I am interpreting the instructions incorrectly, or all three TB's have the same problem. Anyway, I'm not sure this has anything to do with idle.

Please let me know your thoughts. Maybe I need to re-check something that I have overlooked.

Thanks,

Mike

Plus +1..I agree..recheck the plug wires...Crossed wires will "sort of sound fine" at Idle.,But when you take the car out,it Kicks up a Major fuss..Bucks likes a Son of a Gun
