Cannot bolt in stock seats...
Cannot bolt in stock seats...
Hello... So, I just scored me a 88gxl for $400... The guy thought that the car was done but in all it only needed new coils, new injectors, and new spark plugs (Swapped them all out from my surplus of parts from all of my previous 7s....) Actually, only the coils were really bad b/c I swapped those out, and drove the car home... I did everything else after the fact.
Anyway, this little beater is going to my little brother because he needs a car and is a sophmore in high school. Nevertheless, the car came w/o seats and when I tried to bolt in the stock seats from another S4, it seems that the threading inside the hole might be either rusted or stripped (the bolt doesnt thread in, it just spins and spins)... I was wondering what is a cheap, but safe way to rectify such an issue?
P.S.-- Keep in mind that I dont want to dump loads into this car because its not mines and I doubt he will keep it, but I do want it to be safe for him to drive to and from school in....
Thanks...

^^+1 go down to a napa or advanced...take the bolt with you and say that you need a tap for this bolt....its like $4 at most......
make sure when you start to screw it in you go slow and go in twice and out once

These threads easily rust and because they are fine threads, this makes the bolts very difficult to install. I think the threading is M12 x 1.0 but you will have to make sure by bringing the bolt to the store when you buy the tap.
Once you have the tap, clean out the threads. Cover the bolts with antiseize then install each one loosly. You will have to move the seat back and forth to make the holes line up.

Little brothers...ya gotta love em. At least that what mom says. I am keeping my little bro in vehicles also, and when they break down guess who fixes them.
Give him a milk crate to sit on and tell him if he don't like it that he may not be able to sit after you finished kicking him in the ****.

Thanks for all of the assistance you guys... you were right... I retapped the bolts and it worked like a charm.
You laugh, but I did drive the car home w/ a milk crate... lol... I didnt drive far though... only 10-12min.

Ok... So I tapped the drivers side easy... But w/ the passengar side... I tapped 1 hole and the second was so messed up that the tap actually snapped off inside of it... Then I noticed that there was a broken bolt inside of another hole... So, by this time I still had hope and tried screwing a bolt into the one hole that I tapped... But it was spinning free... So I tried to take it out but it wouldn't come out b/c I guess that there is a nut on the inside that is keeping the bolt from coming out...
So, with all this said, should I just say **** it and weld the brackets to the cabin?

Now, you're boned.
At this point, I would cut out the nut on the bottom of the car and weld in new nuts. Yes, I have had to do this before on my car. Once you break a tap, it's all over...

Not always so... I've broken an easy out in one of my rear lug studs before. I drilled out the end of the easy out and hammered in the end of a slightly larger flathead socket. I was then able to back it back out with a socket wrench. I would expect you can get a broken tap out the same way.
Not sure if it's worth the effort to you in this situation but, it might help.
