can the water pump seize? My belts are braking.

Since I installed silverrotor's FD alt in my s5, I've broken 2 alernator belts in a cloud of rubbery smoke and stench. The belts have been also sqeeking alot.

In addition, today, on the hyw. I started runnign really hot, and then began to overheat. I pulled to the side to cool off, so hopefully there is no damage.

So my question...Is it possible that the waterpump and /or waterpump pulley is seizing, causing the belt to rub and eventually brake? This can also attribute the overheating problem.

The belts deflection is good.

Thanks,
-a

Well.. Ive never seen a waterpump on a FC seize up. Can you spin it by hand? If the problem started right after installing the FD alt..wouldnt you think the belt problem would most likely be because of that? Is the alt sitting too far forward/back in relation to the rest of the pulleys?

look for the pulley with the burnt rubber all over it- that should be the culprit...

I didnt see an alt spacer?!?!?!? I thought the only spacer was at the air pump?!!?

The FD alt fit snugly onto the waterpump housing...it didnt look like there was even any room for a spacer.

All the burnt rubber is in the alt area. But what the heck is causing the sudden overheating?

were you running the car with only one belt? that may cause the overheat.

your belts are warming up, melting to the alt pully, and not allowing the water pump to spin.

Triple check.

Is there any burrs within the slots of the V Pulley? Are you using the same stock Belts?

J-rat - the alt is spinning freely. There is a very, very slight wobble in the pulley.

Silver - there was a sharp edge on the center side of the inner track. I dremmeled it more smooth, so there is no chance that the sharp edge is cutting the belt. There are no other burrs. I am not using the same belt as it is too short. I tried 2 pepboys +1 size belts, and now tried a carquest +2 size belt. The forst 2 broke, the 3rd has held up thus far, but is sqeeling like a pig. Im guessing that one will brake within the next day.

Drago86 - I still have the air pump, so there is another belt on the waterpump pulley.

The waterpump spins freely also, without any of the belts attached. I just checked it.

I returned to the original setup. The original belt, and the original alt. We will see what happens now. If all the problems dissapear, we will know that it was either the FD alt, or the double pulley attached to it.

Well, no surprize, but the stock setup worked fine. It got me from NYC to CT last night without any problems. The coolant was fine also, the temp guage stayed rock hard at 195 deg. the whole way.

So, it seems that the culprit is def the FD alt. Perhaps this is a faulty unit, or a faulty pulley. Or its not mounted correctly. This is what I will be checking next.

I'm also having problems with the pullies doing the massive squeek

I admit even though there is the double pully right now I am using both alt and airpump belts till I can get a second alt belt

but I checked everything and it is nice and tight on my end all the pullies look to be lined up just fine

it just squeeks like crazy and heats the belt up really bad

did notice though the side seems somewhat worn but it is really worn on the bottom of the belt and the little paint that was on the pully is all gone on the bottom but the sides of the pully still have all the paint

any idea on whats going on?
and the belt shouldn't bottom out in the pully right?

Make sure the Pulley Is properly torqued down and spacer In place If you have removed It from It's shaft!

i am also having a slight problem as well with my FD alt as well, when i 1st got the alt i noticed that the front belt didnt sit flush inside the pully like the rear one did. the belts are both the same size. it always seems to sqeel after driving hard but i never really think anything of it, havent broken any belts. other that that the alt works great, definitly one of the best investments to my car so far. -alex

Here's a long shot, but it’s possible to stack the e-shaft pulleys wrong:

Are the e-shaft pulleys for the belts on the dual alt pulley same size (diameter)?

as far as I know the pully should be torqued down
will double check it though

the spacer you talk about is this the one on the waterpump housing?

if so it is in place though doesn't fit as snug as with the s4 alt but then again the s4 alt I almost needed a hammer and something else to push it out of place
the FD alt i nthe same spot was snug but not that snug.... so don't think it would cause a problem.

will double check everything though when I get a chance

is it normal though for the inside (where the teeth are on the belt) to wear down?
shouldn't they wear more on the sides then anything else?

No, that's not normal.

Did you put the spacer in front, or behind the alternator.

Drawa line from the crank, waterpump, and alternator, it should be totally straight. If you have to bend it at the waterpump to fit the alternator, your alignment is off, probably because the spacer is in front.

The only way I can see you wearing the teeth off the belt is to have the alignment off that way.

the spacer is in the rear

if the alignment is off it isn't by much
just by eye it doesn't seem to be off that much if really any
will double check things though today

and I can't really order a wider belt now can I? and even if I could don't think it could be much wider or it would cause problems for when I put the second belt on the alt( still running stock air pump belt and the alt belt till I can put both belts on and remove the air pump)

This is very interesting... Same thing happened to me tonight, started with screeching then the alt belt snapped in half.

As you probably know, the belt should only contact the sides of the pulley.
So it's one or a combination of:
1) Worn out belt
2) Wrong size belt
3) Worn out pulley

the pully should be new. least as far as I know silver rotor only gives new pullies

the belt was new...

and the size of the pully I was using a stock pully for the s4 alt... same size I used last time that fit the s4 alt

Check the size of the belt, it shouldn't ride down into the pulley much at all.

It should be a 15/32" V belt. Not sure what size you would use since I run dual alternator belts, but mine is 32.1in long (for a goodyear part num of 15321)
