Question can not accelerate

I just finished helping a friend to rebuilt a 86 N/A RX-7. the problem we are having is that the car will start without problems, but will not idle well. Also it's running like if it were chocking. if you acelerate, it will take a little while for it to pick up. It feels like if the carburator were flooding, but this thing has F.I. Any Ideas? TIA

Did you try an A/F meter to see what's actually happening when you push the gas pedal? There's so many possibilites especially after you just did a rebuild... I'd start looking at your fuel mixture. Does the exhaust smell normal? If it does, even under WOT, it's probably something else.

The car was running but it had an apex seal broke. We opened and replaced the seals and housings. For a while it will start and ran OK. Then we experience this surging problem, replaced spark plugs and other things. Now it will run but will not stay running on it's own. When driving, it feels like if there is not enough gas or maybe too much; the problem is that there is no visible smoke comming out of the exhaust. I will try this A/F meter and see what it gets.

ok, a good first start when rebuilding motor, make sure you're getting compression.... Also check yer timing.. make sure you put the crank angle sensor back in correctly..

Did you port the engine at all? or just stock ports?

It's all stock, no porting. Compression checks at 110-120psi on all sides, and the timing is correct. I swear that it feels like if it was a carburated engine and it was getting too much gas when acelerating.

What's an A/F meter? Can you do compressions checks without taking your car into a mechanic... ie, at home or is the equipment ridiculously expensive?

1. check TPS
2. check idle-adjust screw
3. check rich/lean screw
4. check air intake
5. check intake air thermo sensor
