Can i pull the air pump?

87 TII
Car is all stock, i heard something about the air pump being used to open 5th 6th port on N/A's, will the air pump have any use if i gut my cats and if i might eventually put a straight pipe. Will it be ok to yank the air pump (heard you had to if you gut the cats) on an 87 turbo? I am VERY new to 7's so how many ports does my engine have?
I am thinking that i will be able to get away with gutting the cats and not getting caught for emissions, but without the air pump will i for sure fail smog in 2 years?
I was thinking i could just throw some old cats back in when i gotta go get it resmogged, but would i be able to put the air pump back in easily? or would i just have to have a "friend" talk to another "friend" and help me pass smog?
ANY input is greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks,
James

you need to gut your cats to be able to remove your air pump you should also remove your ACV and replace it with a block off plate. all second generation RX-7's have six-port engines meaning they have six ports. If you gut your cats you will without a doubt fail smog testing. unless you run like alchohol or somthin like that I heard that somewhere on the forum. How long have you had the car?

Only about 2 months... but its not drivable right now because the clutch and shift linkage are shot...until i get a new clutch and a short shifter kit i can only plan on future mods like this one , just living in California kinda tough decision whether or not to keep it to pass emissions, or just say **** it and have some fun. Decisions, decisions, this has to be my daily driver too!

One thing is for sure, i love my 7! Especially the beefy almost muscle car look of the second gen...just doesnt look like an import to me

all turbo engines are 4 port. the only thing the air pump does is lower emmissions.

Thats what I though. T2s don't have 5th and 6th ports. The air pump just pumps air into the cat to lower the amount of HCs. Take it the hell off.

Oh, Register your car at a PO box in a city that does not require emissions Or talk to your "friends".

you just have to look around. I lived in an area where they had strict emissions testing for a while and continuously failed with my rex...horribly...actually damaged something in their machine (always thought that was funny...it broke while testing my car). I finally asked them if there was a city/county nearby that didn't require all this bullshit so I could move. They were happy to get rid of me.

Remove the air pump if your going to lose the cats. Lose the ACV and block it off w/a plate, (this might cause backfiring). And then get a dual alternator pulley to prevent slippage on your waterpump under revs since you're losing a belt from the airpump. DONE.
