Can I Frankenstein an Auto and N/A Manual Driveshaft to make a Turbo one?
Hello,
I am almost finished my S5 Tii into S4 N/A swap and I have an auto driveshaft in right now, but the car shakes like a banshee above 30MPH when I let off the gas. As long as I am accelerating it is pretty smooth, but as soon as I let off the gas, clutch, or put it in neutral it is vibrates really bad. I am thinking the driveshaft is either out of balance or the U-joints are shot. I have both an N/A manual driveshaft (the original one that worked quite well) and an auto and I was wondering if I can swap the spline from the auto onto the manual one to make it work. I know you can change the U-joints with a bit of work, but has anyone ever tried this?
The S5 Tii into S4 N/A swap was actually a little easier than I had thought...other than this issue and I seem to have a large coolant leak from somewhere...but it's raining so it's a little hard to tell. Overall, the swap went well and the car runs amazing.
Let me know any suggestions or ideas.
Thanks,
Justin

I already have the auto shaft in, but the problem is that I think it is shot which is why I want to pull the spline off of it and put it on my manual one. I know the manual one is in good working condition and it won't be 2 inches short like the auto shaft.

Yeah, the problem with the Mazdatrix one is that it is $288 plus shipping, taxes, duty, and exchange which will land it in the neighborhood of $350 bucks and this is a budget project. Also, I don't really want to put too much into the auto driveshaft as only 2 of the 4 inches of spline are really doing any good as it is shorter than the manual one. If I could spend $150 and have them put the spline on the manual one and fix it up, then that might be worth it.

Do a whole lot of searching on this forum and on the FC3S forum. Use the S4 N/A harness and search for posts reagarding swapping an S5 Tii into S4 N/A. If you search for posts by HAILERS, you are bound to come up with stuff regarding this swap. Listen to what he says. It works. NZconvertible is also a great one to search for posts by. Also, get yourself a Haynes manual. It has all the wiring stuff you need to complete the swap. It will just take you some time looking through the diagrams. Then it just takes some time working out the kinks.
