A/C question (Searched)

Hey guys, Did some searching, and maybe either the keywords I was using were bad, or there just isn't any info on the subject. So I figured I would ask.

Are there any differences between N/A and Turbo A/C Components engine bay wise?

no but there were 2 systems, believe it had more to do with dealer/port installed AC versus factory installed AC

^What he said, I concur except that the heads on the Sanden 708 compressors are different S4 vs S5.

I guess I should have provided some more background information. The Turbo II I am looking at buying, the owner had the classic "Iwannamakearacecar" mentality so his first mod was pulling out the a/c compressor for apparent mad horsepower gains.

I am told that all the other components are there, just the fact that the compressor itself is not. You guys mentioned there were two different types of compressors... Would I be able to just source any S4 A/C compressor and bolt it up to the block and connect the lines?

I did some quick googling and couldnt find a picture.

Our cars either came with a Wynn/Sanden compressor or a Nippon Denso Compressor. I tried to find a pic or guide showing the two together but could not. Hopefully with the info I gave you, you may find it.

Post up a picture of the hose mount to compressor and that will help. Does it attach to the compressor with one or more than one bolt?

the sanden units had a single bulkhead connector for the high and low pressure lines, the nippondenso had 2 separate connections at the compressor.

if the car is an early car and has 2 separate lines to the compressor with threaded nut fittings then a denso will drop in, if it has both lines formed into a single connection then you will need to figure out which series sanden you need.

the condenser and evap fittings should work with either compressor+line set you get, if there are no hardlines in the engine bay to the compressor you can just buy a matched set but you will have to notch the bracket if it was for a sanden to make a denso unit fit(did this on my girlfriend's car since her compressor seized up and used an early S4 pump on hers, the denso works better for R134a conversions anyways).

might as well start an r-134 retro fit while youre at it. r12 is hard to find, and pricey if you can. or follow the write up(forget who did it) about using duster-spray for refills

Good point. If you buy a newly rebuilt compressor, chances are it already has the right oil in it for R134. If you try and go with a used one, drain the oil and replace it before you install it in your car. All you need to do besides doing that is the replacement Hi and Low pressure replacement nipples. They simply screw on and you can get them at any auto parts store.

Ah, the comment about a new compressor already having the oil for R134a got me thinking. I was hoping to try and retain the R12

r12, if you can find it, is approaching the price of silver per ounce.

Just make sure you're pulling lots of air through the condenser and it will get cold enough.

Okay guys, Just got the pics. turns out the whole line about "all the underhood stuff being there" isn't entirely accurate. From the looks of it do you guys know what all might be missing? A/C was never my expertise, but I'm pretty solid with anything else mechanical. A/C and electrical work, never vibe well with me.

Here goes..Also, is it just me or does that look like a factory manual rack?

Everything you could want to know can be found here: http://www.norotors.com/index.php?topic=12654.0

From your pictures it looks like you're going to have to get under the dash and do some replacement work. Note the 3rd picture down in that thread. The High Side (lower one) hard line should be sticking out from the fire wall like the low side above it is in your picture.

you can tell from looking at the bay pictures that i'd need to do some under-dash replacement?

From your picture, the high side connection from the Evaporator isn't sticking out from your firewall, so was removed somehow. The Evaporator is under the dash and the only way to replace it is at the Evaporator.

Read the thread I linked you to. Every additional question you might ask is answered there.
