bypass coolant to LIM????

Just wondering if anyone has bypassed the coolant port form the rear housing to the LIM on an S4 TII???? I know the turbo gets its coolant from there, but I can get coolant from the outlet on the rear iron for the turbo.

I got a few Ideas on how to acomplish this.

1. Get a blank piece of metal the size of the outlet from the housing and put it in instead of the oring. Of course you would permetex a gasket onto the blank on the side of the the housing.

2. weld shut the port on the LIM, with the blank shank as stated above.

Anyone done this and what sucess have you had? I ask before I do because ripping the turbo off the get the LIM off because of a coolant leak sucks ***.

1. eliminate coolant heating the LIM thus heating the air charge. (main benefit )

2. avoid EVAR having to rip the turbo and LIM out because of an Oring failure.

Mazdatrix, Pineapple, Atkins, just to name a few all have plugs specifically for this purpose. Seems much easier to drive a freeze plug into the coolant hole than to try an weld on aluminum that's had twenty years of gunk soak into the pores.

I honestly don't think eliminating coolant from the LIM is going to make it THAT much cooler. You have it bolted to a hot block and sitting next to an even hotter exhaust manifold. The intake ports in the housings are surrounded by coolant anyways.

How common are LIM o-ring failures anyways? I try to do as much reading as I can here, and it does not seem like it's common enough to worry about, especially if you're replacing the o-rings when the manifold is off.

Brand new orings, fresh rebuild. Ran for 20 min and had coolant blowing out around the rear housing oring. Bolts were torqued to spec, brand new LIM gasket ect ect. Its just a PITA to do while in the car.

I am a firm believer in the more heat you keep away from the intake charge, the better. Alot of people will say what you said or that its stupid ect ect, but this is not a daily driven car. Pure track car.

Yeah. saw it on thier site. Gonna let it sit till I can get the plugs in. Make my life easier. 1 less spot for a leak to start.
