Buying clutches

I searched and saw many different opinions, but thought I'd throw this out on clutch recommendations since it looks like a big job and I only want to do once.

Both my 90 Vert and 94 Probe gt need clutches. I want basically normal city driving but want something to last. My Probe got 164K on the original and Mazda RX7 only got about 70K. I could buy OEM but they look pricey. I hear more bad then good with Excedy, mixed on ACT, bad on Centerforce and ok with Clutchmasters and South Bend. Anyone have anything to say concerning what they have and longevity?

Exedy makes the oem parts, so they know how to do it. I have an excedy on my 88 gxl. It looked just like the oem that came out-at 189k kilometers.

I have a Centerforce duel Friction on my 90 vert. It works just fine as well. Have had it for about 15k miles. It replaced an oem that came out at135k miles.

I wouldn't blink to use excedy or centerforce again. I have them both on new hydraulics. The feel is great no problems whatsoever.

BTW, isn't the Probe and the NA rx7 clutch the same part number?

clutches are one of the biggest rip off items in the car world, if you have a local brake and clutch shop ( they are getting harder to find ) they can make you clutch and pressure plate for a fraction of the cost of a "performance" clutch.

if your car is stock then it just might be easier to get a stock clutch, sometimes when you mess with things like a clutch they can take away from the driving comfort of the car, a stock car does not require the same attention as one that is modified of driven VERY hard

exedy oem clutch is the best you can get if your car is basically stock.

Just dont be like some honda people and put a solid 6 puck on a stock engine...
Exedy and ACT are the only clutch companies I have experience on and they have never let me down yet lol.

These are all good endorsements. I'll stick with Exedy oem.

I dont know if the Probe is the same P/N? Excedy skips my model year 94' on their website.

Exedy and centerforce have treated me very well. The centerforce was slightly stiffer but not harsh whatso ever, perfect for DD IMHO. It feels like it wants to catch a little sooner which i like more compared to stock oem clutches.

Like rob said, clutches are a big rip off. My buddy recently told me about a shop in Huntington NY i think. They make clutch disc themselves and they guarantee to hold more power at a much cheaper price. He also knows a few people who have used them and there lovin it. If you can find a shop in your area that does this then i'd shoot for it.
