burning oil... turbo or oil rings?

Well my car started to smoke a lil bit one morning and just figured I might have added too much premix during my last fill up. Well its been smoking more and more often now. It does it sometimes when starting up but most of the time it smokes after I left off the gas or when it drops back down to idle. It never happens while under load though. I was wondering if this is more consistent with oil leaking in the turbo oil seals or whether I am gonna have to crack open the engine again to do the oil rings. If anybody has some input, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Aaron

i know its oil, kinda whitish bluish grey color. The OMP has been removed and I run premix only.

Sounds like oil rings. Pull your downpipe/precat and check the turbine housing for oil. Also pull the TID and check the compressor housing for excessive oil as well.

The rest for o-rings is to hold the car at about 5K for a minute, then let off the gas suddenly. If you get smoke out the exhuast, the o-rings are going bad.

damnit, i think it is the o-rings. I just had the turbo off yesterday and I didn't see too much oil. Only 2700 on the engine too. Should I use OEM instead of the viton, since that's what I used? That royally pisses me off.

Well, I tried that test yesterday. Held it at 5k for at least a minute, let off, and no smoke like the puff that I have been seeing. I tried the test twice and both times there was no smoke. Could it still be the o-rings or maybe something else.

BTW, I have all emissions removed and I have the crank case vent running to the charcoal canister. I know if that and another line is plugged it will smoke but I heard that you could get away with plugging one and running the other to the charcoal. Should I put a breather on it instead? Go to a catch can? Could that possibly make any difference?

Thanks,
Aaron

I don't know about that I just left my system vented atmospheric. I went through both problems of my turbo and oil control rings failing. What I noticed is that when the turbo went it smoked all the time load or idle. With the oilcontrol rings it would smoke during high rpm let off and after awhile it progressed to just high rpm. Anything from 1k-4k was safe to drive though.

Sounds like it's your turbo, i had those exact problems!

Lil puff between shifts also, and at idle it would sometimes puff really bad. Got anybody with a spare turbo you can try?

Yeah I'm rebuilding my friends TII engine right now so I can jack his turbo real quick and check. Although, I'm not too sure how good his turbo is. Thanks JasonL, that makes me feel a little relieved.

Make sure you put the oil control rings springs in properly:
