Question bump steer problem

Im having a lot of bump steer problems. I have an 87 SE and it has been having the problem since I bought the car. Wheel bearings need to be repacked, and quite a few bushings are shot. Aside from that, anything else to look at?

what do you mean bump steer problems? does the car dart about when you hit somthing? bump steer is a term used to describe the tow changes of a wheel when the suspension travels.

well, if you want to make your car feel like new, replace the bearings (not just repack them) and the bushings. Plus replace rod ends and ball joints.

I didn't think any of the bearing were able to be repacked. I thought they had to be replaced all together
Anyway, I would rebuild the suspension before you try to get rid of any bump steer (real, felt, or otherwise). Worn out ball joints and bushing can have a big impact on the alignment. The geometry could be changing from corner to corner, or bump to bump.
Before I rebuilt the front end on my old mustang it would pull to whatever side had most recently hit a bump.

bump steer, as in how you described. The suspension geometry is changing during bumps. Front and back. Sometimes the suspension will have oversteer characteristics in one turn, and understeer in the same turn under the same conditions. Over bumps, the car will pull hard to one side depending on the bump.

I have the rear toe eliminator bushings waiting for installation and rear camber negators as well. Front suspension has quite a bit of play. Also have underbrace, swaybars, and tower brace awaiting installation.

Was fairly noticeable when I purchased the car, and after installing springs and tokico illuminas, the effect was amplified.

Your car is 25 years old. All the rubber is trashed. Few cars of that age have good balljoints, bearings, tie rod ends,....hell anything. You know they're bad and that's where your problems are coming from. Replace it all if you want new car handling.

I'm going through the same thing with my GTX. I won't be happy till it's brand new because I know it's not right. The rear steer I got from the sloppy bushings was "fun" though. Join up with Mazdaspeed, do a couple autoxs if ya have to, buy the stuff cheap and enjoy.
